got an odd one here, but that is generally how i roll. o)

family member is throwing me a freestanding soda cooler which i am intending to transmogrify into my own version of a winador/ coolerdor. (pix pending).

it is a CURRENTLY INNOPARABLE unit, with the finish and seals in good condition. as i have stable climate control in my house, i am not too worried about that, however i like the viewability of winadors. having not measured it yet, i am guessing it is comparanle to a 20ish bottle vino.

have read the coolerdor primer, and the winador primer. have an operable mediumish cooler running now. really looking for tips, advice, caveats, and general feedback.

discuss.

Make sure it is thermoelectric and not compression driven. Compression driven coolers will not maintain humidity. I was going to try this out, and figured as a test run would put a desktop humidor in the cooler. It even sucked the humidity out of the humidor.

just to clarify, unit does not currently work, and am planning on keeping it that way. i can usually keep everything in my house except exterior walls to 71 F in the dead of summer.

want to use the cooler as a cabinet, essentially.

Do a search here....There are many posts with tons of details on converting wine fridges, coolers, full sized fridges, and many other appliances into working humidors.

Good luck...Keep us posted!

Many people use non working fridges for their cabinet humidors. I would recommend Heartfelt beads for sure, I have 2# in my wineador and they work like a charm. I've currently unplugged it for the winter and it's been in the mid 60s both temp & Rh without an issue.

I didn't do anything to the wine fridge at all; I think I'll put in an ETC next summer to better regulate the temp.

I have drawers from Forrest (Golfnut) and they work and look fantastic; highly recommend if you are looking for drawers.

an Accumonitor with some beads would do an awesome job for you

That cabinet is really cool. Would be neat to repaint top and bottom with a cigar theme, maybe use a base coat color and overlay some cigar bands then clear coat everything.
Either way really cool just keep it away from sunlight with all that glass.

so there is essentially a styrofoam insulation tray at the base of the cab. not sure if i can safely remove, and styrofoam is so porous it is NEVER coming clean. thinking that, after another thorough bleaching, i am going to use a sealing paint, after silicone caulk is laid to seal drain plugs and crannies.

waterproof, antimicrobial, industrial kitchen grade on all my sealants here. and i did verify with the local hardware ladies this stuff is safe with, and will not dissolve, the styrofoam.

thoughts?

Not sure about the silicone, you might want to get an expert opinion before using it. The stink coming from that stuff while it cures is nasty! Maybe aquarium silicone.

+1 on the aquarium silicone. It's very easy to use and [obviously] creates a great seal.

thenks for the tip on the aquarium silicone, would not have thought of that on my own.

also, you CANNOT paint or seal stryofoam reliably. so... that undertray has been yanked. now have a hole down into the metal underframe. thinking of dropping a tray into place and sealing it. it has a vented flat tray to ride over that area (originally over the 'foam insulation), so thinking of using that as a safe storage for primary himidification, with additional on differing levels. unles santa is kind with my bills and i have enough jack in january to go active humidification.
