A buddy of mine, who likes to think he is a cigar expert recently returned from a trip to Mexico. He brought me back a small wooden box with a glass lid containing what he claimed were 6 Cuban cigars. They had no bands, and honestly seemed kind of fishy to me.

This was the only marking on the box. Any ideas?

Yep...another one bites the dust. Do not buy cigars in the Caribbean or Mexico unless it is an established cigar company = LCDH.

No glass top boxes
6 packs are for beer, not cigars
No box code
Mark looks like it's stamped on rather than burned on

Gesture was nice, but he got taken. Happened to all of us at some point I suppose.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were bogus, but being as I know nothing of Cuban cigars I thought I'd ask. Thought maybe they were just really cheap Cubans. (Is there such a thing even? Like the Cuban version of a swisher sweet?)

Box marking is stamped on (not burned) and there is a good bit of some kind of glue in the corners of the glass lid. Cigars themselves feel really dry, no hint of oil. Heads are straight and pointed like a pencil.... All in all felt too "cheap" for what I was expecting.

Thanks all!

Tell your buddy you had one and it was delicious and your gonna let the rest age for a bit and discard. I've tried telling friends they have gotten played into buying fake Cubans and they don't get it.

Well, there are inexpensive Cubans. I also imagine you can get some stuff in Cuba that aren't exactly certified by the central controlling agencies, but as far as a Swisher Sweet? No, not really.

Yes, I see this a lot when people rave about their cubans and assure everyone that will listen they are authentic. Human nature & ego kicks in where people don't want to believe they got taken. It happens, there are a lot of devious people in the world trying to separate you from your greenbacks. Get over it, chalk it up to one of life's little lessons and only buy from reliable sources.

Jose L Piedra & Guants are probably the cheapest you'll find. Good thing with these is I doubt anyone would ever take the time to counterfeit them. Bad thing is they taste like dog poopie.

Or you could be honest with him, educate him, so he doesn't get taken again. If he is truly a friend, that's what I would do.

After much sole searching, and a few glasses of glenlivet at the local cigar shop/lounge, I finally mentioned to my buddy that he had "most likely" (read as most defiantly) bought cigars that were not real Cubans.

He sputtered for a bit, but finally admitted that the ones he bought for himself were awful and he actually seemed relieved.

Live and learn. We enjoyed some very tasty Rocky Patels that were way better than the "Cubans" he brought back.

Small chance that any part of that box has ever been near Cuba.

Glad you told him man... I personally do not understand how friends don't tell/educate their friends and family especially if there's a chance they will travel back to the same place with the opportunity to buy them again. I went to Cabo last month and saw so many fakes. I returned and was talking to a waitress at my cigar lounge who went to Cabo last Summer and told me how her boyfriend bought some fakes there and while she tried to tell him, he cut her off saying he was in the middle of negotiating. LOL Then she didn't have the heart to tell him after the fact. She said they want to go back this year and I asked if she was going to tell him finally. She said no. I then asked her if she knows what can be inside of fakes... all the nasty shit, etc. Her eyes opened wide and said she's definitely gonna tell him. LOL
