CVS to pull all Tobacco by Oct 1st 2014

I have a feeling that more and more big box stores will follow suit. It may take 10-15 years but it will happen. There is already a gas station here that pulled all the Tobacco and Alcohol from all it's locations.

It will be the beginning of the end if Walgreens pulls it. They are one of the reasons I fell in love with tobacco. When I was a kid I remember when it was in the isle and I could smell of of the tobacco; it was amazing back then.

I heard this on the radio on the way to my coffee place this morning...I think they said it would cost CVS 2 billion dollars in lost revenue each year....THAT is a lot of cash to leave on the table

I'm also surprised it took this long. Was in CVS the other day and they're opening a clinic inside. Seems to me that if they're dispensing actual health care and not just consumables, they didn't have a real choice.

I don't know how many deaths are attributed to alcohol each year, but they still carry booze :dunno:

I can understand cvs and wal greens, but gas station profits would plummet if they removed tobacco and alcohol

Also like the guy in the article said, this isn't going to stop anybody from smoking. They'll just go elsewhere for their tobacco or cigarettes

Of the people I know who smoke such products, I can't think of a single one who regularly purchased their tobacco from CVS or the like.

They also do carry quite a few high end manufacturers cigars in tins...........

Will likely only affect cigarette smokers. Cigar and pipe smokers, at least I feel, rarely purchased their tobacco products from CVS. Well, maybe in a pinch, they carried Capt. Black.

This argument happens a lot, but the case is that all the other bans haven't failed, but because they did it at the worst possible time, Prohibition did fail, and they aren't going to try it again. They've made age limits on it to a good degree, they feel they've done what they can.

Well to an addicted person, nothing outside of a cancelling agent can really stop the addiction, even quitting cold turkey makes you incredibly vulnerable to re-addiction

All in all, I don't see any reason not to remove the tobacco products from CVS, Riteaid and other such places. They don't sell premium cigars and they don't really make their revenue from them either.

Dude us old timers first got most of our cigars from pharmacies 37 years ago. Some of them carried pretty vast collections.

As a tobacconist I would like to see CVS, Wallgreens, in fact all general and grocery stores, all gas stations etc to stop selling them. If tobacco products were only available at tobacconists it would resolve a lot of problems...why?

1. No one goes into a tobacconist unless they want tobacco products.
2. No children are allowed, less exposure to tobacco advertising.
3. Cigarette manufacturers would start to like me instead of not giving me the time of day.
4. I know about tobacco, gas station employees etc do not.

Just think about all the tobacco advertising young children are exposed to when they walk into those places. The cigarette display is normally the biggest advertising space in any of those stores you go to buy gas or groceries with your children.

I predict very soon that all tobacco will only be sold at specialist tobacco stores, much like liquor is sold in most of the country.

Still don't get how they can justify removing tobacco, but continuing to sell alcohol. And I love a drink as much as the next guy, don't get me wrong...Just think it's hypocritical. Alcohol causes health problems, and attributes to deaths when abused just as cigarettes do, yes?

And I will disagree with this, gas stations make most of their money on consumable in store. They depend on you jumping inside and grabbing that big gulp, snack and cigs which they pay pennies for. Tons of people buy their cigs from gas stations because their prices are so much cheaper than most other places. In downtown the price for a pack is $7 whereas a gas station is in the $3-$4 a pack range. This is due to the high quantity that they purchase to sell.

This same logic can be applied to movie theaters, they don't make much on us going to see the movie (it cost them a ton just to "rent" the movie themselves) they bank on their high priced concessions.

Because it's a political football that lets outside interests get involved in the shaping of how laws are made. Booze is a product that every politician knows has tons of lobbyists in place to line the pockets of those who need to get re elected so legislation is formed to that end. Since tobacco has been attacked for the last few decades the public has shouted from the rooftops how evil tobacco is yet they strain at a gnat and swallow the camel because it feels good to the public that they are doing something proactive...yet booze is one of those things that end up costing the public more than tobacco in the end. Each generation wants to make their point in some way and next generation will choose their next 'chew toy' and the cycle begins again. With pot being the next 'cash now' Gov't will realize how much money they have missed out on and more states will ratify legislation to make it legal...it's all about the money folks...always has been and always will.
