That's a crazy site. I was shocked at anything under 17% being considered a crappy tip. I was a server in a previous life and considered anything under 15% crappy unless I dropped the ball. The way I see it is if you can't tip at least 15% then you probably can't afford to go out to eat. I start at 20% and if they are superb it goes up from there. These people get paid 2.13 an hour.

PS: Katie do you know a Dr. Robin Weiss? She was listed in Cleveland and that name sounds so familiar but she doesn't google up.

There are a few states where they have the same minimum wage as every other worker though...not that it matters...I tipp good unless there is a problem with the service...not the food.

Doc, I knw you arent that old, but we all know times change... the standard now is about 18... when I get a tip... anything under 18 is crappy.. to me, I mean crappy tippers are everywhere.... you get crappy tips every night followed up with great tippers

thats life, and I have been a server or bartender for 7 years, paying my way through college, and for some jackass to get bitter and create a site is just plain stupid

20% for me most times, makes it easier to figure out. I generally round up to the nearest dollar. I tip more for lunches as they cost less than dinner, but the waiter/waitress does the same amount of work for me. If I have to ask more than once or more than one person needs to ask for a drink fill-up or for a condiment on the table that is dry, I generally start deducting some money. If I get bad service, I generally tell the person direct vs bitching to the manager. Gives the person a chance next time to improve and the manager does not need to hear bitching all the time. If someone is outstanding, I do tell the manager, they do not hear that enough I can imagine.

For excellent, way-beyond the call of duty service I leave 20-25% (or more depending on the total bill)
For good / decent service I leave 15%
For marginal / shitty service I leave NOTHING, I tell the manager and I don't return

For exceptional service 20 to 25%
Regularly 18 to 20%
Below 10%
I was a bar tender in college and never understood the guys that did not leave anything when I thought I did a good job. Talking to the manager about poor service is a must.

I can go to the same restaraunt a couple times and get bad service once and great service another time. Also it depends on how busy they are, etc. I don't NOT want to go back just because I got bad service and good service another time. You take the bad with the good to eat sometimes. Needless to say, bad service (Not asking how I'm doing, Never refilling drinks {me having to ask}, and having to get another person to do something), well all that will get them zip. I don't unless I feel like a good job. They're not entitled to it.

20% for good, less for crappy, unless it's just worthless then I leave nothing, but someone will know why. I dont like to leave it a mystery!

I used to wait tables, I generally tip 20% +/- 5% is the service isn't that good/is really good

tipping poorly is about the cheapest thing one can do. If you can't afford to tip, eat fast food

Why in the world would anyone tip for bad service??? I'm not real generous but I'm not stingy either. My wife waitressed for 12 years at my grandmother's restaurant so I know the ins and outs. Once in a while I will tip really well but never ever for bad service. And I will also tell a manager about bad or great service. They need to hear it and the waitstaff need to as well.

Tipping has become standard which I don't like.

A tip should come from effort, now-a-days things are expected. Drinks brought out, condiments etc.

If the server doesn't do the things that are expected, why should I have to leave them 20%?

I tip well for good service (at least 20-25%), but also make a point to personally thank the server for making the meal a better experience. I think that means a lot to them as well.

But tipping well for poor or non existent service only reinforces the behavior. I feel no need to do that in the least. I imagine any server who gets undertipped for a good reason already suspects why it happened. They might not like it, but they're not surprised....

I regularly tip 17% - $18% but for really great service I go 20% - $25. If there's alcohol involved in the order, I generally tip even more (dunno why really...I just do).

An exception to the rule is at the Sonic Drive-in (a fast-food car-hop place)...if the waitress is on roller skates, I double my regular tip. LOL!

My tipping percentage is also somewhat based on how long I have been at the table.

Thank you.... people dont get this idea...

Ok, I got a good example for you...

I worked tonight.. had a party of 24 people 2 servers... they had 18% gratuity but we went above and beyond so.. the grat was $400 and they left an extra $200

so for a 2K tab they left us roughly $600... some people understand how high maintance they are and some dont, i am not even going to say that I deserve 20% on all tables but damn if I ever deserve 10... there are a number of servers that are like this but there are more that are on the other side that suck and therefore deserve shitty tips...

and I would put a ton of money on the fact that the biatch that made that site, sucks at her job and doesnt deserve good tips..
