Pop or Coke

pop...always.

I grew up around the great lakes (Buffalo) from what I hear, most who grew up around these water bodies also say pop.

Also, from what I understand, 'coke' is a down-south thing. Where I live now everyone calls it 'soda'. that's one bandwagon I just can;t get on

Coke...your the Pepsi generation. Actually it has been interesting living around the country and what people call soft drinks. Pop, soda, coke, a light beverage etc.

Yep, I'm originally from down South and grew up callin' pretty much all soft drinks "coke." Some time in the intervening years, though, I came to call is soda. Don't remember when/where that happened.

People call drinks that aren't Coca Cola "coke"? I never knew. I thought you were asking if we prefer Coke (Coca Cola) or some other pop. Around here, Coke means Coca Cola, and pop is any sweet carbonated beverage.

I used to be a loyal Coca Cola drinker until they switched to corn syrup instead of sugar in the 80s, like all the others did. I can't stand any of them now. I do buy a sixpack of Mexican Coca Cola now and then, because it still contains sugar (and is in a glass bottle).

I say soda now, but as a kid it was always coke.

My dad still says coke though.

Never used the word pop. The first time I really ever heard anyone use it was probably in college, my roomate from ohio.

When I was growing up in the midwest, we used the term "pop" to mean any soft drink. And the cola of choice was usually RC.

it's soda, or a soft-drink, Coke is short for coca cola, and Pop is what midwesterners call it

All soft drinks are called Coke, root beer being the exception (at least for me).

Yup...we use 'Coke' as a generic soda pop reference.

Doesn't seem all that strange to me, really. Consider the following:

- Xerox
- Kleenex
- Band-Aid
- AstroTurf
- Dumpster
- Frisbee
- Jacuzzi
- Jell-o
- Kitty Litter
- Popsicle
- Q-Tip
- Rollerblade
- Sheetrock
- Styrofoam
- Velcro

All of those are BRAND NAMES that we have used as generic descriptive terms.

Frank is right in the south for sure.


When I grew up in Michigan it was pop.

Started using soda in the Army and the past few years. (Eastern seaboard)

And now it has come full circle back to pop he in Nbraska, "The good life."
