To answer your question, people filled their cart to make sure their coupon exceptions applied. Not to hold inventory.

People put stuff in their cart so that they wouldn't have to figure out what they wanted in the midst of the fire fight. It's pretty standard practice that carts don't reserve anything. At least it is at the sites I usually frequent.
