So far I've enjoyed this thread. McCallan's 12yr. Is my favorite to date. I haven't tried and of the top shelf brands. I will be adding to the list.....

Have any of you tried Monkey Shoulder? I saw it on sale and thought I'd give it a go. Any thoughts on it?

i have also seen it but haven't picked any up. i thought that was bourbon do they make scotch too
i had to go and look it up. i am not one to whole heartedly belive in a review cause most companies pay for the review, but it got pretty good reviews. sometimes you can find a good budget drink but most things at that price go down like a 4oz. cup of shot just my opinion. but according to the reviews this is not the case

I think it's really good. Actually the bottle drew me in first, then the price.
Anyway, I normally drink bourbon, so the peat and smoke flavors stood out first. I always pour neat, sip a few times, and add an ice cube, then a few more slowly throughout the glass. I like the way the flavors change throughout.
Anyway, I liked it overall. Would probably keep a bottle on hand, at least until my palate expands a little.

I'm mostly a bourbon guy (especially with a cigar), but when I mix it up, I love a big peaty scotch. Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin are my typical go to scotches. Also drink Talisker from time to time along with the other islays.

I tried the Ablour Abunadh (sp?), but I didn't like it. Too much sherry maybe?

They do not. I have tried a lot of scotches, but the above is my all-time favorite. Pretty expensive here due to high sin taxes, but occasionally available for much lower prices due to traveling relatives. . .

That Laphroaig 15 is pretty nice as well, but I prefer the raw, wild taste of the 10-year.

Nice collection, dj!
They actually do, But usually special editions however.

Sheep dip and Pig snout. I think they are made by the same people as Monkey shoulder. Pretty good for a cheap scotch. JW 21 is currently my fav. But I Macallan, Laphroaig, Balvenie..... most of the rest of y'alls lists.

Cannot say enough about Glenmorangie. Their whole line is great and unique. The 10 year is a great summer scotch

JW Blue is definitely a great scotch, they also have a series of scotches that you can only buy in duty free, they are named after the famous travel routes like the silk route, the gold route, etc. All good stuff, but I'm just as happy with a handle of JW Red, with some extra large ice cubes and a stogie! Way to go!

Man, I can't believe I posted in this thread 10 years ago. My favorites are now the peat monsters: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Talisker, etc. I tell the uninitiated who wrinkle their noses at them that the 'nastier' they are, the more I like 'em. Last night, I had the last dram from a bottle of the Glenlivet 15 French Oak gifted me by my wife quite some time back. On deck, is the Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask. It's my second bottle of it and is now probably one of my favorite finished malts...although their Portwood is quite nice, too.

If you like the peated guys - try Ardbeg. Easily my favorite JUST behind Lagavulin for my tastes
