Back out to the shop today, to work on the ashtrays. The week kind of got away from us, as my FIL passed thursday evening. What a great guy, he was 93 and lived a full life. Raised 5 kids, 4 that were inherited and provided for all. God speed Dwight.

Anyway, watching Golf/NASCAR in the shop workin on the trays-so hang in there boys. They'll be done soon-try to get some pics up later this afternoon or early evening.

Sorry for your loss.

And as far as looks go, I need something to set in the dirt, while I'm fishin or sitting in the outfield at a little league game, so nothing fancy needed here.

I'm pretty sure, you'll be pleased-fellas.

Unique, with a touch of "man cave" personality. :glassesgr

I was waiting to see the finished product and figured i would just make one. While you are the metal smith and Wade and Sascha can work with wood. I am sadly skilled with a sewing machine. I figure some leather or vinyl will have something to gether pretty quick. I was waiting to see the finished size to see if I already had something or need to make something.

Very cool,

I saw some nice cordura zippered bags at a wholesale liquidation place the other day. They look like a bank deposit bag but 3/4 the size and in black. I'll stop by and see if they still have some.

Alright gentlemen, here's where were at. The cradle is pretty sweet, and now comes the tray. I thought I had conquered the quest for material, but alas! The aluminum I picked up, has too much "memory" and won't relax to a flat state. It's aircraft grade .025 or 22 ga. Gonna have to find something thinner, that is unless you guys want your trays from a Coors can.:stretchgr

Heres some pics from last nite, the aluminum can thing is just a little volatile to bending. It arches and goes back flat, but no bueno.

If this thing frustrates me much more, it may get canned and the six of you will get one of my man cave ashtrays-last pic.

That looks great! Would it help to find out the gauge of the original Oneoff tray? Somebody here has one, I think.

By the way, the man cave ashtray is very cool. I like it a lot more than the overly dainty Stinky Ashtray.

Just a brain fart type thought but do they make real think spring steel? Since it's tempered to revert back to it's original state it seems like it'd be ideal if you could get some at the right gauge.

to be honest, I kind of like the beer can version, who cares if it won't fit in my pocket flat. my body is round, maybe it will be form fitting. The man cave version is cool as well.

Wow, that looks incredible. That is some top notch work there. Are beer can gauged sheets available for purchase? Will that gauge hold up with long term usage and flexing?

Dave, just call it "kismet", but I had a feeling you'd kinda like the beer theme. I might have to make you an extra tray-what's yer favorite brew? You know of course, I'll have to down the beer to get the can.........:glassesgr

I'm gonna do some phone work today, see what I can come up with. It has to bend enough to get the arch effect, but still go back to flat so as not to take up a bunch of space. The cradle most assuredly won't bend flat, 1/8" cold rolled and 1" .60 wall tubing-beefy.

I think this is the problem we are seeing here, it works for me because i will probably not take it with me much...the world is my ashtray.... but it is not springing back to flat.

I just called a couple places that sell spring steel, but the minuimum order is $250 and we don't know what gague we need.

Keep trying for a bit Vorra and let's see what you can come up with.
