The [ame="http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=30105"]I smoke every...[/ame] thread got me thinking about my mosquito problem. They're fierce this summer in the porch of hell and it's seriously cutting into my smoke time. Why you ask? Well, The house I'm renting is a non-smoking government rental and smoking government rentals are next to non-existent. Also, I have a slight allergic reaction to mosquito bites. Mine swell up to twice the normal size and itch for weeks, not days. Most anti-itch creams and allergen meds last 20-30 minutes max. I can only stop them from itching if I bleed them!!! I know :barf:

Plus mosquitoes love me!! :inlove: No, seriously they love me! I can be standing in a crowded room of people plus 2-3 mosquitoes. By the end of the night I have 2-3 bites and every one else is unscathed. One summer night in Roswell, about 15 years ago I was bitten 23 times! When I was at the academy in Georgia they thought I had the chicken pox because I was covered head to toe in red bumps! In a two day span I had been bitten 34 times!! No, I'm not exaggerating!! :frown:

So the question is this: What do you all use to ward off the little fiends? I've tried regular and deep woods off, 100% deet sprays, Off mosquito coils, tiki torches with lemonwood and several other off the shelf products.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I'd like to smoke my stogies in peace and itchless!!

They are a pain... Try a mosquito net or smoke indoors its not like they'll come knocking on your door wondering why you're smoking just use a good odour neutraliser and crack open a few windows to air out the place.

Hey Dogg,

My dad is just like you... the one in the crowd who never fails to find the mosquitos. He also happens to be allergic to most of the sprays and such.

The best solution for him ended up being a mechanical solution... Screen Tent.

Seriously, for 80 bux or less, set up one of those screened tents with a floor on your porch or deck... set up a little table and your comfy chair and kiss those little bastards goodbye!

(if you can't find the type with a floor, you could always lay a tarp down or something)

Just my two cents... best of luck to you brother.

That's a great solution.

Other than that, I'd recommend DEET, getting rid of any standing water, and I know of one community that built a bunch of bat houses to help control the problem, as a single bat can eat a thousand mosquitoes in a night.

Do yourself a favor and buy a whole house Ozone generator. A large o e will run about $500 - $750. That way you can smoke inside, and once a week or so run the machine for a few hours, but make sure all people and pets are not in the home. Also rune the heating and/or AC while using the machine. It is what used car dealers and home restoration companies use to defuse smells.

If I don't smoke before the sun is about to set, then I don't smoke. Too much trouble with the bugs.

Spray the yard...go to your local hardware store and they should have some spray that you put in a garden applicator and spray with a hose. This will kill existing mosquitos and larva up to 6 weeks. It's like $10 out of pocket and works!

Smoke repels mosquitoes. So smoke like a bunch of cigars at once or have a bonfire and put some freshly pulled weeds on top of the flames. And get a bunch of those deet candles. Or screen in the porch. Or set up your garage for smoking. Or set up a room in your basement and seal it off tight with a fan blowing out one window and a fan coming in through another. Also once you are done use an odor eliminating candle.

Yea I think that is probably what I would end up doing is just using one room in the house. And trying to keep it from smelling when the government comes over.

There are a lot of odor eliminators out there to try out, maybe one of them actually does work.

I'll second that one! I sprayed the yard and bushes with "Cutter"(not sure who makes it). I bought the kind you attach to the garden hose, and it worked well for several weeks. I found the trick to it is to try to spray when you won't be getting any rain for a few days. That and spraying on some "Off with deet" before I go out usually does the trick for me..

I think this is what you are talking about. I use it and it works! You gotta spray everything down in your yard. Bushes, trees the whole nine.

That back yard cutter is the whip. I have the same allergy issues you have and this stuff is the bomb.

The girlfriend has a major skeeter problem, they rarely bother me. Her and a few of her friend purchased those Off clip-ons at the start of summer, have not heard many more complaints, seem to work.

Glad you like it. It's my other passion. Hot women wearing thigh highs!!

I tried smoking them out once, didn't work. I don't have a garage or basement so that's out. I've thought about getting an odor eliminator/air cleaner. I just don't know if I want to drop the coin considering I'm only here for another 5 months. Then I rotate back to San Diego.

I'm in a condo with a small backyard ( 25x40') that shares 3 walls with other back yards. Will this stuff still work if I only spray my yard?

I'm looking into the tents and setting up screens around the patio. I'm going to see how much it'll actually cost to do it. If it's cheap enough I may do that.

I actually saw the mosquito traps at Home depot, they look like they work. However, it's the cost that gets me.

I'm looking into the citronella plants/grass. If I can locate them, that might be do able also. I'm also looking into lemon grass.

Thank you all for the suggestions and keep them coming if you have them!!

I'm from Mississippi - the mosquito is our state bird! I would try not going outside at all to smoke and purchase a home filtration system like I use, works great and mostly importantly no bugs...
