Need a lil help here. I'm trying to get my lawn ready for summer. My goal is to have the greenest most weed free lawn on the block! I went to Home Depot and I was told that I need to use a pre-emergent so I don't get weeds. Cool. I got a bag. However, I already have a few weeds. So I got some Ortho weed be gone. The one that hooks up the garden hose. That brings me to my question. If I put down the pre-emergent when can I use the weed killer? Right after? Or do I need to wait a some time between applications? Thanks!

Turf professional myself. Put the pre-emergent down first and water it in tonight, then tomorrow you can go out and use the post-emergent. Two completely different modes of action so you could go right after the other, but its vital to get water on the pre-emergent so it starts to do its job.

That's what I do and then during the summer I use this formula that so helps me works and I have the greenest lawn on the block. This is a formula made by a greenskeeper and he developed this formula and when I first saw it thought it was a gimmick until I tried it during our drought season a couple years ago,,,people thought I was cheating and watering my lawn.

You will need:

One full can of regular pop (any kind-no diet soda)
One full can of beer (no light beer) 12oz
1/2 Cup of Liquid dishwashing soap (do NOT use anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid)
1/2 Cup of household ammonia
1/2 Cup of mouthwash (any brand)
Directions:

Pour into 10-gallon hose-end sprayer (other sizes will work too)
In high heat, apply every three weeks

Bro, thank you so much. Would it be a good idea to rake up the yard first and maybe cut the grass. I have brermuda and its still dormant but I've seen folks in the neighborhood cut theirs.

Dont cut the grass but definitely need to rake the debris out. Wait to cut the grass for 2 days after spraying the weeds, herbicide will be more effective by coming in contact with more plant material on the weeds.

I saw this on TV a long time ago. Gotta try it. How much should I use. And do I use this instead of fertilizer?

here's a thought, not to burst your bubble, but that greensest lawn on the block you wish for isnt' going to come in one season. it's gonna take several seasons to get a full lawn of lush green grass.

follows these gents advice to a tee and don't get upset about having to pull lots and lots of weeds by hand.

me personally, i started from scratch...killed it all, tilled, replanted and then picked weeds by hand for 2 years and now there's not a weed one, 5 yrs later.

best of luck

I will have to try this year! I have been working on my back lawn for a long time and its still looks bad. The neighbors cats tear it up and piss everywhere and kill my grass

Often overlooked aerating in the spring and dethatching in the fall. Scotts lawncare actually has a great site for homeowners as well. Also when cutting no more then 1/3 height of the lawn off at a time and keep a sharp blade.

I don't even use fertilizer anymore as this concoction does it all. The pop and beer are food for grass. Ammonia promotes growth and turns the lawn green. The soap is a wetting agent, allowing the formula to penetrate to the roots. And the mouthwash kills bugs, plus it makes your lawn minty fresh.

Put it all into a hose end sprayer that you can pick up at Lowe's or Home Depot and apply every three weeks. Then, water as usual. And your blades should never look better.

This lawn tonic may also save you some water this summer. While you can water your lawn any day under current rules, I only waters three days a week and the lawn has never looked better. So if you're lawn is having trouble you might give it a try.

This will be my third year doing this and I stopped using those stupid lawn services that I swear use watered down product that never did shyte for the weeds even though I had them come back 2 or 3 times. I did it religiously every 3 weeks and looked at my lawn and there is no thatch this year hardly and I won't have to aerate either. A whole summers worth of doing this cost me around $20.

My yard is about 1/2 an acre so it takes me about twice the volume of this recipe. Best thing about it is you can't F up your lawn with this and it's not going to burn it, it won't kill it and it literally stops the bugs.

Concoction sounds legit, and can see why you wouldnt need to dethatch...the pop and beer are carbohydrates which will stimulate the microbes in the soil, which in turn decompose the organic matter. The ammonia is actually the grass food, the chemical formula for ammonia is NH3 so it contains Nitrogen, which promotes top growth and gives your lawn its green color. The soap helps with water penetration and retention in the soil, which explains why youre not watering as frequently now.

And yea lawn care companies arent all theyre cracked up to be, plenty of info online to do everything yourself. Im an assistant superintendent on a golf course myself.

The Scotts website Justin mentioned is great, check it out! Good luck

jjflynn3,

I have three small dogs, and I was wondering if there is something I can use to help keep my grass from dying from the dogs urinating in it?

What these guys up here said ^^^^^

Also compost. If you have the space, make and use compost. Also check out Gardening by the Yard, on HGTV.

The problems with the neighbors who

1) won't use pesticides
2) are too lazy to pull weeds

So the wind blows all the fricken weed seeds into my yard. Got any advise for that?

I don't like em either cause I have small kids. Neighbor on the other side of me is the opposite. Let all the dandelions grow up and they hit em hard with 2-4-D on a windy day. Almost killed my new maple tree. Can't win.
