It really started around the year 2000. A few years before that folks used the GPS but due to the inaccuracies of them, only getting you within say 10 to 30 yards of a way point they used orange containers to find the cache. Some folks were even using compass and maps prior to 2000.

The big craze really took off after 2000 due to the releasing of government satelites that allowed finding way points to within 3 feet.

You know... if one was into it enough... all around the country, we could set up BOTL geocaching. Have a part of the forum on here, where we could list coordinates of "geo-bombs". Then, when a brother is near that part of the country, he could seek it out, and do a take n' put. Only thing is... probably not enough of us into it. Plus, maintenance on the "bombs"... woul;d have to hold great conditions to be decent to smoke.

Oh well... an interesting thought, though.

When I was in my last year of college (2002-2003), a lot of students in the biology programs around different schools were doing research on using GPS with field studies. It was really fascinating. I helped with a project where we recorded small mammal trappings, including the GPS coordinates of the location of the traps. We could walk out into a huge field of brush, and walk right to each trap out there. I really wanted to get into using GPS more after that... alas, I never did. But now, with my new phone, I think I may.

this seems to me like one of those things that "sounds" like it would be fun, so you do it once, run out and buy some fancy hand held gps thing then the initial excitement fizzles out after doing it 3 or 4 times.

come to think of it, seems a lot like...ahh...never mind...

:crackwhip
That was my experience, but the in-laws bought us the GPS. It was fun getting close and having to look for it. Seems too easy now.

I just showed this to my wife. Guess where she is off to. Looks like I'll be having a GPS in about 30 minutes or so. I tried telling her my phone does it but no telling her.

Geocaching is pretty cool. I haven't done it much but my friend is all over it.

The micro caches aren't that great because they are a beyotch to find and are just a log (kinda boring for kids) but the ammo can ones are awesome usually.

My name is Cachetastical I think (Money-Cache-Hos was taken :pitchfork)

I have just read that the phone Apps are not as reliable as you might think. BUt should get you within 40 feet or so. Also if the original person had crappy technology, then her could be off by 20 feet. read the geocaching site, lots of info there.

We do it, and really have a great time with it! Our tag there is TravelingGeoTrio-since our dog often goes on the hunts with us. I think we've found caches in 15 states. Most of the ones that I've been to, you could smoke a cigar while on the hunt-bonus. It was one of the things that seemed silly at first, and then we bought the $80 Geomate Jr. and went out for a few. It's great on road trips. You can stop in nearly any rest stop/roadside park and there is something there. I still need to get out and find one in CA, that's actually on our agenda this weekend.

It's overly silly, but rather amusing to find something you are hunting for. It gives us a place to take the dog for a good walk-and something entertaining for us on the same walk. If I had kids, and took a road trip-there is no way I wouldn't be geocaching along the way.

We geocache! Started a few years ago. Even got my 80 year old grandpa into it! It's fun and a great excuse to get out of the house. Sometimes frustrating because sometimes caches have been moved or destroyed, but geocache.com allows you to see when it was found last and what condition the cache was in. Tons of fun, but beware...it's addicting!

What is the phrase my buddy uses all of the time. "We use billions of dollars worth of satellites to find tupper ware in the woods. It is fun when you find what you are looking for.
