Hello All. I just joined your forum hoping you could help me fix a travesty I have come into the possession of. I came down to Louisiana to visit with my girlfriends grandparents with her. Long story short, her grandfather gave me the box of cigars (that would be pictured below if I could link to other sites). Unfortunatly, the celophane had been cut like they had been in a humidor previously, but whoever gifted them to him I assume didn't realize he didn't have a humidor of his own, nor that he didn't care for the cigars in question. Therefor, they sat in his air conditioned office at his shop for 5 years now, under a stack of papers. Considering they were in Louisiana, where its always pretty naturally humid, and the AC was only on during the day in the spring and summer, do you think they can be saved?

yes, they may not be what they once could have been, but they will still burn. If they have not already been chewed up by beetles, then you are pronbably safe putting them into proper storage for the next 6 months to help bring them back. LA is fairly humi year round. Smoke one now and see what you think. Are they crispy or do they feel good? if they are crispy, you may want to bring them back slowly in seperate storage, starting at 50% RH and mving up a nit each month. If they feel decent just store them for a few months, and see how they do.

I've smoke one and a half, the first was really dry, really hardto pull, and really weak on flavor. The second was alot better, but still way dry. all of them look to be in similar condition to the second, very dry, but still aromatic.

@dpricenator - Beyond Cohiba, I don't know. That's the only identifier on them, they also look -alot- older than 5 years, I think they might have been in someones colection before his.

Also, is there a cheap way to make a humidor? I don't have the funds to invest in one at the moment, but i really want to see these cigars in better shape eventually.

Oh, minor update, too. He just gave me a bunch of other cigars people have given him that he didn't care for, mostly nicaraguan, gonna go through them sometime tonight and see how they look.

Only way to find out is to load 'em into your humidor make sure it's at the right humidity. I would maybe even make it a little more humid to give them a little moisture then bring it down to proper specs. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

Saved?

This is too ambiguous. Will they ever be as they were, or should be, No!

Can they be brought back to a decent smokeable stage, maybe.

Unless you are hard up for cigars, you have smoked 2 and from the sounds of it, not worth trying.

OH, cohibas.....so considering the source...I would say they are most likely fake cohibas and not worth the work.As far as a humidor goes, a Tupperware and some boveda packs will work. hit up you local tobacconist for the bovedas.

They look legit... and were given to him by a cuban he let stay in his motor home for a few weeks after Katrina hit. *shrug*

Side note, are Cohiba's any good, atleast when they're real? I know nothing about cigars, let alone cubans lol

yeah the whole point of counterfiet cigars is to fool the person who does not know, so of course they look legit. start google fake cubans and you'll see what I mean.

Ye s Cohibas are good when legit and stored properly.

no sarcasm man, just honesty. Fake cigars have fooled seasoned pros. When you say they were given to him by a cuban guy.........this is the beginning of most stories that end with fake cuban cigars. Best way is to smoke them, and know what you are looking for. otherwise Google Fake Cuban Cigars and there are galleries of comparison at you finger tips. Or snap a pic a post it here. you'll have you answer quickly

My buddy lives right on the water in Malibu. He said he doesn't have a humi. He opened a 2 year old box of MC #2 that were on a self. We smoked one, they were perfect.

I could not believe it. :scratchhe

Unless I got punked

Maybe if there is enough humidity were he lives they might be OK.

Sorry, they are fakes. The most obvious clue is that Cuban Cohibas do not come wrapped in cellophane.

Damn... lol. Might still try, but they're too far gone to put much effort into if they';re fake...
If they're real, like some of you seem to think, however, I'd love to really work at it. :D

Bro, I'm not the guru of all things Cohiba, but see that double row of white dots on the top of the band? It should be three dots, not two. There are guys on here that know a lot more than me, but I don't think real ones ever had a band with only two dots. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. That said, try the tupperware humidor, and bring them up slowly, (over a couple of months), to 65% humidity, starting from 50. I rehabilitated some Romeo Y Julieta tubos in this manner, and while they never got back to where they should have been, they were still pretty good. I've had some fake Cohibas in the past that were really pretty decent, but nothing like the real deal. Good luck, and do go to the intro thread and introduce yourself. There are a lot of great folks here that may just lead you down the slippery slope of cigar madness.
