My experience has nothing to do with your opinions. Just merely pointing out that you've expressed that all you smoke is Cubans, and every chance you get you bring them up even if the discussion has nothing to do with them.
I mean to say there is NO hype over Cuban cigars is kind of silly...
I'm friends with quite a few people from other countries and their most desired cigars are all Domestic cigars. They have Cubans readily available and they really seek the non-Cuban brands which aren't sold much out of the United States.
I would say prior to the 1990's the Cubans probably were the best cigars in the world, and some may still be today. But over the past couple decades, specially this last one, the Domestic cigar industries have really stepped up their game. Not just in quantity of selection but quality.
Some day I would love to try a blind taste test of a mix of Cubans and Domestic cigars and see who can really pick out the Cuban cigars and see who ranks them in what order.
Sounds like a good challenge!!! Someone set it up. Blind taste test between Nickerson and Icehog!!

If you have smoked 1,000 NCs and 1 GOOD CC, you would get it right 100 out of a 100 tries. And no, I am not exaggerating.
Actually, this was put to the test on another board a few years back and it wasn't that conclusive. If I recall correctly, the person who swore he could always tell CCs from NCs identified a Cabaiguan as 100%, no-doubt-about-it Cuban.
FWIW, from my personal experience (one of Benzo's review contests), I was able to correctly differentiate NC from CC, but I've also had some Nicaraguan smokes that might fool me if they were given to me unbanded.
Agree with ya Asher! Sure you would be able to pick out the CCs youve smoked before. But a blind taste test of some random CCs and NCs. I know I've had a few well aged NC's that I might have sworn were CCs if they werent banded, I wouldn't have known which CC's.
I'd love to try it with around 20 people some day for more accurate results.
Size and wrapper is important. I've seen similar blind tastes done but all the Cubans were typical Cuban sizes (thinner ring gauges) and the Domestic cigars were Robusto's and larger and some were Maduro and Connecticut?
I already made an interesting selection of Cuban and Domestic cigars that you cannot tell apart by appearance.
Hopefully some day I'll be able to conduct such an experiment.
This is the the cigar that i will say is a s close to a cuban as you can get in anon cuban.
I've heard that about a lot of Tatuaje. La Riqueza is another one I've heard it about.

Nah, I think I was just picking PSD4 over lots of NCs in your "versus" thread. That was fun.
Smoked a Tatuaje Face, a couple Esencias, a Fuente King T, a Cain and a couple other NCs recently, so I am always open to a good cigar. The Esencias are wonderful, and I really liked the King T. The Tatuaje, the Cain and the rest, I'd rather smoke a Party Short.
You are quite opinionated yourself, young man, and you're at times quite myopic when expressing them. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke. I happen to like Cubans, if that makes me a "snob" in your youthful eyes, so be it. :wink:
Funny you mentioned this here. I did a contest here about 3 years ago where people send me their favorite stick with out bands and I rated them after smoking. I TOTALLY fell in love withthe Cabi Robusto Extra. One of my favorite sticks for sure.
To my palette (at least in non-blind tests), the combination of a Connecticut shade wrapper with Nicaraguan fillers can yield a very Cubanesque profile, particularly when Pepin is doing the blending. Nicaraguan puros (which I love) don't taste Cuban to me, but there's something about that CT/Nic combination.
I'm not a huge fan of CT shade wrappers as I find they often impart an unpleasant, metallic taste, but the spicy Nicaraguan tobacco seems to balance that out just right.

Shortly after I started smoking I had a few NC Cohibas and loved them. My tastes have evolved quite a bit since then. The last one I smoked just didnt do it for me, so I gave the rest away. It really doesnt matter if I dont like them though, as long as you do.

Very good points. I thought the Cabi was a Juan Lopez #2 but the size was off. Pretty sure of the 20 blind sticks the Cabi won the contest.

fftopic:Having smoked a lot of CCs and NCs over the last 50 years, I would have to say, in general, that the quality of CCs is considerably down, and that of NCs is considerably up. That said, would be hard pressed to tell a La Riqueza from a similar sized unbanded CC.

The Monte #2 was a fine cigar and one of the first Cuban cigars I've had. The Partagas Serie D cuban, good, robust but overpowering for my palate. The RyJ cuban wasn't the Monte #2 but was better IMO than the Cohiba. Now I've a Don Robainas I'm sitting on and debating whether to smoke that sooner or later, before or after I've exhausted my supply of Don Cervantes and Tatuajes.
