Of all the places in golf I want to see and/or play before I go...the 17th at Sawgrass has to be at or near the top of my list. 112 yards of sheer bliss...pretty much between a PW and 9i for me depending on the wind...

Golf Magazine did a piece in their May issue where they tracked all the shots made at 17 during a random day in February. Out of 136 tee shots, 66 of them ended up in the drink (48.5%). I would have thought that number would have been even higher...

There's some video of it too on their website at www.golf.com/17

You gotta walk the Links at Pebble Beach before you die.

Play 'em if you want...but walking them is a must.

Standing on the tee at 8 and 17...That will stick with you for a LONG time.

Not one higher up the list than Augusta National. If we're only talking places to play, that's a ridiculously long list. With the help of Hendy, I might be knocking one of my tops off the list if we go play Arcadia Bluffs in Northern Michigan in May. Bandon Dunes area is WAY up there, as well.

I played there a couple of times when I was growing up. I still remember the first time I got on to stay on the green on the first try. Great place to play, fantastic hole design.

I went to The Players Championship in '98 and the gate we walked in from put us right at 17, we pretty much hung around 16, 17 and 18 everyday.

My GF and I were there when this happened.

Would love to play here. You almost have to do the stay and play type thing though. I think the regular rate right now is something like $375 which is insane.

What was the ruling on that one? I recall the incident, but not the ruling.

Ball is replaced where it came to rest, they actually had to have the TV guys help determine where exactly it was. So play was stopped for a few minutes.

I believe this is the rule that would cover that type of thing:

18-1. By Outside Agency
If a ball at rest is moved by an outside agency, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced.

Note: It is a question of fact whether a ball has been moved by an outside agency. In order to apply this Rule, it must be known or virtually certain that an outside agency has moved the ball. In the absence of such knowledge or certainty, the player must play the ball as it lies or, if the ball is not found, proceed under Rule 27-1.
edit... J-Dub beat me to it, lol

Gotta love all the benefits the tour players have that us peons don't get in our day to day play. How many times have you hit a great shot that went out of sight, only to not be able to find the ball and have to take a stroke because of it? Not for the tour players. Between the gallery and all of the marshals acting as forecaddies. That has to be the one single most aggravating thing that happens on the course for me. Losing a ball that simply should not be lost.

Here in Central WI we have a golf course that replicated this hole. I have to golf there but I can't imagine how many balls I would lose to the water.

While it isn't a true island, one of my local courses (just around the corner from here) has a mostly island green on one of their courses. You can hit long or bail out to the right to a certain degree. Put plenty of balls in the drink, and if the right side wasn't there, I would have put more in. Still, nice challenge. Little longer than Sawgrass (around 150 yards), but not much.

Agreed 100%. Can't begin to fathom the number of times I have thought that exact same thing searching for a ball that should have been on just the edge of the rough and simply wasn't there.

Lived in Jacksonville and played that hole many times... actually plays around 130 from the blues..... I have hit 9 iron, up to 6 iron on a windy day.... even birdied it once or twice.... it's not too bad because you have already played 16 holes when you get to the tee.... now if it was the 2nd hole.. that would really suck!

I can sure identify with this. Two years ago I was having the round of my life. I had shot as low as 83 quite a few times, but could never get below that. Late in the round I am thinking breaking 80 might be a possibility for the first time. I hit a fabulous drive on a long par 5. My partner and I both see it land in the middle of the fairway then roll behind a small knoll. . .still in the middle of the fairway. We get down to the knoll and. . .you guessed it. . .the ball is gone. There were no people, no critters, at least that we could see, and the course was dry and the weather was perfect. We never found the ball. It was maddening. . .and not the first time that has ever happened to me. . .:hysterica

Glad to know it's not just me! Of course, most times mine's not in the middle of the fairway when I manage to lose it!

I've been playing quite a bit with my Dad and he plays with a buddy who I swear has some supernatural knack for finding balls. The man is just amazing. Balls will go somewhere that I wouldn't even bother trying to look and he'll have found the ball in 10 seconds. Nice to have him around!
