I've been smoking for quite some time, and although I prefer mild-medium cigars, I have enjoyed some very full bodied smokes. I got a sample pack recently that included a Purio Indio Viejo, an aged blend composed of top-grade Sumatra wrappers and lush Jamastran long-leaf fillers. The cigar was described as 'a medium bodied handmade with an earthy core complemented by a pleasant touch of sweetness'. Sounds good, right?

About a quarter stick into the smoke, I started feeling uneasy. My breathing became a little difficult, I got somewhat lightheaded, and got the sweats. I thought I would get through it, but I just had to put down the smoke and go outside for some fresh air. At one point I got concerned about how lousy I felt, but it passed.

I felt lousy for the hour. I had smoked Purio Indios before ( not Viejo ) without issue, and again, never had this experience while smoking a cigar. Needless to say, I chucked that sucker out and took a cigar break for a day or two to recover. Damn, not sure what happened!

Anybody have a similar experience smoking in general, or related to a particular cigar? When I think of the variety I have smoked over many years, I was real surprised to get hit so hard. :frown:

My first and only pukin' from a cigar came from a fresh Fuente anejo double corona. Smoked it to the nub (about 2.5-3 hours) and puked my guts out for an hour afterward...

What you felt was the nicotine kicking in! Did you smoke the cigar on an empty stomach? If so this could cause the nicotine to be absorbed much quicker into your body causing you to feel this way.

yeah on a CAO Lx2 Lancero, had smoked a couple before but always after a meal. One day got the bright idea to have it as my morning smoke with nothing but a coffee and a bagel in my stomach. Got about Half way and gut just went sour.

Everyone has thier own tolerance before that "Nic kick" hits ya. The trick is to the minute ya feel it coming on you got to stop and get something sweet to drink or some food in ya before you finish the smoke.

I can honestly say I've had my share of terrible cigars but luckily none that made me ill to where I couldn't smoke the next day. I have had a few that gave me a headache but's that's been it.

Like others have said, next time you start to get that feeling eat or drink something with a bunch of sugar in it. That will usually kill the nic buzz.

More importantly however, you are gonna want to stay away from those Puros Indios. When I first started smoking cigars I thought they were the premium cigar they come off as in their descriptions but soon found out I would rather smoke a paper towel roll stuffed with computer paper.

Hey Justin,

I think maybe you had counterfeit Puros Indios.
Cigar Aficionado has rated them over 90 and Rolando Reyes personally inspects every single cigar at the factory.

The human body can act a bit strange sometimes. I used to smoke like a fire and chew like a phillies baseball player. I have gone 4 deep on an empy stomach and never a problem.

Just yesterday i had a Fuente 858 candela followed an Avo 787 and 1/2 way through the Avo i started to feel uneasy. It made me sad to throw away the cigar with a third left but i learned a while ago to always listen to my body.

I reflected on what may have caused this feeling and the only thing i could come up with was that i had eaten very lightly yesterday. I think based on this i would have to agree it had something to do with my sugar level in my blood supply.

best regards,
m.a.d.

p.s. i have made a commitment to be positive and any negativity to keep to myself but i cannot lie.

Puros Indios are the foulest, most vile anything i have ever put in my mouth. Sweet, Jesus. I had a second one just to be sure.

Puros Indios one of the few cigars I've had that just made me say "wtf". Tastes like cardboard and dirt.

HAHA, you guys sound like a bunch of namby pamby girls with your sour stomachs and sweats!

Why, back when I was a youngster and first starting to enjoy cigars, I would get up in the morning and EAT a couple of Puros Indios with the first cup of coffee of the day (so thick you had to stir it with the broken tree limbs my father whipped us with to wake us up for school) for breakfast because dear ol' Dad got such a hot deal on CI he spent all the grocery money for the first half of the year on several boxes... prior to finding out they tasted like something that came out the back end of the dog if you actually lit them and pressed them to your dry, wind chafed lips....

Keep in mind this wasn't some 7:00am event either, this was us getting up at 2am to gather firewood to help keep the cattle warm enough so the milk wouldn't freeze on our hands and in the buckets while we milked them... prior to churning it to butter.... all this before starting the long walk to school at 6am in 2' deep snow, barefoot!

During that break/relaxing walk of any given day in the 4th grade (churning butter is hard work, let me tell you), up hill, BOTH WAYS...I'd typically have my first real smoke of the day, probably a Duque Churchill- simply because I couldn't wait until lunch to eat that f'ng thing (no groceries for the second half of the year...thanks again for that purchase, CI/Dad)... and because the heat it generated quite possibly allowed me to keep the majority of my fingers...

So... just think about that story before you put out a fine cigar like a Fuente 858, or a CAO LX2, regardless of if you're feeling like you've been running at top speed on a treadmill for an hour after downing a bottle of warm tequila with a Ipecac syrup shooter!

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS that you can sit and enjoy those nice smokes....

Something I've always wondered about nicotine in cigars:

Can you develop a nicotine addiction from smoking cigars?

Obviously people develop the addiction with cigarettes, but with cigars you don't inhale. However, you are still getting a large dose of nicotine.

If you smoke cigars frequently enough can you develop an actual physiological addiction, the same way you would from cigarettes?

i've smoked for nearly 30 years. i've stopped for weeks at a time and never had the feeling that i had to have a cigar. also, i've had blood tests after not smoking for only three days and it did not register any nicotine in my bloodstream.

I smoked a Zombie last week on an empty stomach. Luckily, AJ had ordered some kettle chips, which I promptly devoured at the 2/3rds mark. Great cigar, but man, I wouldn't smoke another on an empty stomach.

Well since we're attributing it to the nic-hit, what's the deal with nicotine as far as quantity? I mean are certain tobacco types responsible for higher quantities of nicotine, or perhaps 'full bodied' smokes have more than mild?

What's the real deal or can it even be measured per cigar?

I had a Camacho that I smoked on an empty stomach that caused my wife to dial 911. Yep. Ambulances and everything. I've had a Bolivar that put me to bed, also smoked on an empty stomach. I no longer smoke on an empty stomach.

And, after reading some of the posts, I don't know that I'd attribute getting ill to a bad cigar. Some are just more stout than others.

As far as nicotine addiction goes, I used to smoke cigarettes and use smokeless tobacco. I was definately addicted. However, I can smoke a cigar everyday, or go weeks without one and not feel the cravings that I used to for cigarettes and snuff.

Well...I don't know about the nicotine addiction but I do know I can be a real bastard untill I've had my timeout once a day with good cigar.
I can't remeber the last time I went a day without having one cigar in over a year.
