I am sure this has been debated over here before, but I am considering a box of 04, 05, or 06 5x5 versus an 08 varnished box of CoLa's. Things that are obvious are the age of the sticks and the packaging, but is there anything else I should consider before pulling the trigger?

5x5 is cardboard box and pricing is exactly the same. The 5x5 come with 4-5 years of age though. Something to give some serious consideration to, especially if I am not going to age them, these will be smoked.

This is big... you need to decide if would you rather recycle cardboard or burn wood after you smoke them. :)

If cost is the same, I'll always take age. I'm not a fan of long-term aging in cardboard, but I subject you're going to properly store and rest them on your own once you get them..... so I'd go with age over packaging.

Let us know what you decide!

Cheers! :cbig:
+1

Wouldn't you like to know?
Nah; I've had great luck with them... on a recent visit to China, one of the LCDHs in Beijing had some great 5-packs with a ton of age....... they smoked phenomenally a few weeks after proper rest!

A lot depends on your trust of your source's storage conditions...
We get a lot of these well aged as well. Because are taxes are so high they are slow to move from the distributors because even a 5 pack becomes over $200. Smoked a ton of 03 hoyo DC's last year from the 5x3's that were amazing

Pick up the 5x5s and try to trade someone for an empty varnished box and transfer them into the varnished box...

I'd typically say go for the varnished box especially if you were unsure of your vendors storage conditions. Considering I'm pretty positive I know who the vendor is I know he'll take care of you if there's something wrong with the smokes. I'm curious to hear how the 5x5's are since I've always eyed those aged ones but never pulled the trigger.

Storage is everything. I have a 5X5 of 2002 Siglo Vs that after a year still taste like cardboard. Guess that's why the price was so low.
