I've never (since age 9 or 10) liked being in smoke-filled rooms or rooms that smelled of stale smoke. That being said, I think this is probably the best essay in defense of smoking that I've ever seen. I had Joe Jackson's album, but never knew that he was a thinker as well.. As to "everything is bad for you," my m-i-l sent my wife an article I haven't read yet, that shower curtains give off chemicals that are bad for you. Doesn't seem like I've had such bad results.
In the essay, Jackson says that tobacco is "bad" only because of the effects of smoke from burning tobacco. Then what explains the gum and tooth problems caused by chew?
