So, I’m active Duty Military and my mother was born in Havana. We still have family members living in Cuba but I have not made contact with them yet. I would like to travel to Cuba to see my family and learn about my culture. With the recent steps backward we have taken under this administration, what would be my best bet to try to get there in august? Has anyone traveled there since Trump decided to pull back on the reigns after Obama? Looking for any advice, especially any military guys with experience.

This is a unique situation but you are not the first Cuban America to ask. One of my guys is 1st gen Mexican American and his hometown goes back and forth with the cartels. Right now the cartels have been forced out because the people armed up and kicked them out. Anyways between the website listed above which showed the restrictions (If he can be out after dark, can he drive, can he travel straight from the airport to home or take a detour around a certain city) and talking to the travel officer(Your command should have one, if not your higher echelon command will) who then talked to the pentagon we were able to get him home for the holidays. There is a process, your command should know it. If they don’t respectfully request to contact your higher echelon command. Or, if there is a Chief around (If you are Navy/Marines) tell him your story, he will help you out.

Yeah I’m a prior enlisted officer at my unit — just haven’t heard of anyone traveling to scuba since the Trump administration. Ill give a shout to to the Command Security Officer, I just hope that a trip would be worth it. If there is a ton of constraints on places it can visit, and where you can spend your money, it may not be worth it while under this staff.

I wouldn't say it was steps backwards. It was a shitty deal to begin with. But enough of that.

Also, depends on branch. Countries are graded based on threat level, you might have to file an APES request and see if it gets approved. But like i said, depends on branch of service. For Marines we had to request permission for any out of country travel, i know some Navy guys just submit leave and bounce.

Sounds like a question you need to present to your COC.

Navy is the same way. But Sailors will be Sailors. APEC or APES that’s the acronym I was looking for.
