Anna Nicole Smith's son dies at hospital bedside

By John MarquisMon Sep 11, 6:17 PM ET

Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son died suddenly at her bedside in a Bahamian hospital where the former Playboy Playmate was recovering from the birth of a daughter, police said on Monday.
Daniel Smith was found sitting upright in a chair in his mother's room at the private Doctors Hospital in the Bahamian capital of Nassau early on Sunday and could not be revived, police said. There were no signs of trauma on his body and no sign of a struggle in the room, police said.
Daniel had flown to Nassau on Saturday to see his 38-year-old mother, who had checked into the hospital under an assumed name and delivered a healthy baby girl by Caesarean section on Thursday.
An autopsy was being performed at nearby Prince Margaret Hospital, according to assistant police commissioner Reginald Ferguson. He said police had not ruled out any cause of death and were still awaiting the pathologist's report.
"It would not be wise for police to try and come to a conclusion before we have a proper investigation," Ferguson said.
Smith's lawyer, Howard K. Stern, said he did not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.
"Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being," Stern said in a news release.
Reached by phone, Stern declined to give any details about Daniel's death. Daniel appeared in "The Anna Nicole Show," a reality TV series that aired on the E! cable channel.
The identity of the newborn's father was not disclosed. The baby was in another part of the hospital when Daniel was found dead, investigators said.
Since being named Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1993, the former Vicki Lynn Hogan from Mexia, Texas, has never been far from the public spotlight. In 1994, she married wheelchair-bound oil tycoon J. Marshall Howard, 89, after meeting him at a strip club.
His death, after 14 months of marriage, triggered a legal battle over his estate between Smith and his son, E. Pierce Marshall. Earlier this year, she won a U.S. Supreme Court decision giving her another chance to collect millions of dollars. Pierce Marshall died in June at age 67.

Saw that on Headline News yesterday. I remember them mentioning that a spokesperson for trimspa commented on the situation which I found odd.

Geez the kid was too young to die unless he was drugged up or just unhealthy in some way.

Yea these things are always odd and sad. You do have to wonder about drugs and heart issues. I wonder what the autopsy will show.

PS: Did you notice that her lawyers name is Howard Stern?

I wouldn't jump to conclusions guys.

This guy I worked and hung out with back home just died in his sleep a few weeks ago and a classmate of mine died in her sleep like a week after graduation.

The lawyers name is kinda funny...I wonder if he has gone by Howard K. Stern his whole life or threw the K. in there after Stern got popular.

He and Anna Nicole worked for Trimspa...or so I have read, so that explains their involvement.

Hmmmm, A young apparent healthy male in low twenties to die while sitting in a chair. Percentages probably show drugs or heart ailment would be the top two reasons and that come to my mind as well. Some comes from my field experience as well. His apperance and pasty white skin clue me in as well. RIP young Smith, you died too young no matter the cause.

Your friends did not die from sleeping Todd, they died from some cause, maybe even just natural causes, as well as young Smith could have. Normal healthy younger people do not die or expire that I know of. Even the elderly that do there heart gives out or there is some cause of death.

Banger you are right percentage wise it's the things you think of the most. As for young people dying in their sleep it can be from a number of things. Many times young people are mixing drugs with alcohol and go into respiratory arrest. Happens alot more in people that have sleep apnea.

My thinking comes from being a first responder, not hearsay or NE Medical Journal etc.. I think sleep apnea death could happen when not diagnosed or treated properly. A large contributory factor would be obesity as that is a major problem in the USA, even for very young minors. I am not talking about SIDS or crib death in infants, that is very different and one fire call I am glad have not to have run first due on.

I ask all large patients if they snore. You are right big people do have an increased incidence of sleep apnea. Normally when you stop breathing you have a startle reflex that briefly awakens you, hence the reason for interrupted sleep and daytime drowsiness. If you add alcohol and sleep aides onto the situation you can take away that startle response and just stay asleep not breathing. I guess we have kind of gotten off topic but it brings up a good point. Anyone who is a heavy snorer should have a sleep study. It could save your life.
