Other then the complete ban on flavoured cigars and cigarettes we already have all of those rules and more in place. Whoever is saying that they will be able to get smokers down under 5% only needs to look to Canada to figure out that find out that if smokers want to smoke they will no matter what the government tries to do. Other then making it completely illegal of course.

But thats what they are working towards.. A ban on smoking :angryteet
Good thing they taxed tobacco products with SCHIP to make money for the kids healthcare and now want to cut smoking which means even less money for that program! :hammersma

Yeah, but watch them hoist up the tax/schip on them bro. That's what we have up here. As revenues fall, tax goes up. heh. A recent box of 20 RP Decade Torps cost me $265 in taxes alone.

The Government does not want to ban smoking...end of story. Once people get past the PC crap, people would see that the gov is in bed with the tobacco industry. If tobacco was banned, the gov. would lose billions of dollars from a predictable source of income. It is a very simple concept....MONEY!

At some point the gov will break our backs. At that point the citizens of this country will revolt.

Fine... They don't want to ban smoking. But everytime they do something I disagree with it. Obama just said that the new regulations should get smoking down to 5% in the US. How is that bringing money in for the govt.?

The 5% comment is the PC crap I mentioned. The gov knows tobacco tax revenues will subside to some degree. This is why the gov. is bitching about soda, trans fat, etc. Pretty soon there will be taxes for those things...to protect children of course. Again, it is very simple and it will never stop until citizens stand up and say NO.

The numbers are unrealistic. I think that the sin taxes in Canada support almost all of are Medical system. We pay $12 for a pack of cigarettes. $25 for a dozen bud. WE have reduced smoking to 16.5% but no where near those predictions. Canada is almost like a test lab as to how far you can puch these things and have people continue to pay. Our other restrictions we have that go beyond those proposed are no tobacco advertising at all. Way more stringant import rules and regulations. You can't even have tobacco visible in a store if minors are allowed. Try buying a cigar in a place like that where they have every thing hidden and you have to ask a hundred questions to find out what they have. Canada couldn't afford for everyone to quit smoking because of the taxes. If the USA continues to follow our outrageous tax system on it neither will they be able to afford it.

This bill was written by Philip Morris, so it seems that the goal is to reduce competition, not smoking:

Interesting points, but I disagree about the conspiracy with tobacco part. I think that the government is playing multiple sides of the same coin, but I don't believe they're in bed with big tobacco. In my humble opinion, they are playing to different factions of the socialist majority, basically making it look like they are giving all of them what they want. One group is definately anti-tobacco, at all costs. However, more of them want to bleed us for "progressive" programs through our taxes. Our pres is giving both of them what they want, and will continue to do so until the money runs out, or until he gets replaced.

"Any remaining tobacco-related sponsorships of sports and entertainment events will be banned, as will giveaways of non-tobacco items with the purchase of a tobacco product.

I never said the word conspiracy. I said the government is in bed with the tobacco industry. The government is also in bed with the anti tobacco organizations. Conspiracy? No, just a government who is a selfish whore.
