Just received word today that I am a candidate for an I.A tour there. Just wanted any info that a brother or 2 could give me that is currently there or recently got back.

Helped stand up the CITF and the JIIF....what would later become JTF-170.....that would be assimilated into JTF-160 and become JTF-GTMO.

Bring ALL your cigars. There ain't a ^%$#ing thing on the base. No kidding.

Closest thing the NEX has to "cigars" are the Jamaican crapsticks.

words of advice....

- get used to hearing ""it's on the barge" - EVERYTHING is "on the barge".

- banana rats (hutia) - read up...you'll make a lot of new "friends" while you're there.

-Ride Mountain Bikes? You can rent one for a week or two...the trails are rated all the way up to Double Black Diamond...and they aren't joking!

Best of Luck to ya!

At first thought it sounds like a good place to go. But after you actually think about it for a minute, is it really a good place to be stationed? I can't imagine the Americans are allowed to go off base, right? What a cruel joke to be stationed on Cuba and not even be allowed to see the sights and smoke a good cigar in Havana!

How in the hell did we ever get a military base there anyway??? I'm too lazy to look it up and can't remember ever learning how it came to be.

You'll have PLENTY of time to learn about it once you get there.

get SCUBA certified if you aren't already - diving down there is unbelievable - think Grand Cayman - except unspoiled.

Technically, Windward side is the only side with "anything" on it...Leeward is the runway and a Mess hall...literally.

If you get in good with the guys at MarSecFor they might allow you to go through MCMAP with them.

Good Luck!

About as far away as you can get from Havana on the same island !

Didn't you guys lease the base ages ago?

There is a rumour that Fidel has a draw full of in uncashed cheques for the rent !

The Cuban–American Treaty was signed on February 17, 1903, by the first president of Cuba, Tomás Estrada Palma, and on February 23, 1903, by the president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The treaty stipulates that Republic of Cuba will perpetually lease to the United States the Guantánamo Bay area (surrounding areas of land and water) for the purpose of coaling and naval stations. The United States will have absolute jurisdiction and control over the area and in return will recognize the Republic of Cuba's ultimate sovereignty over the area.
