I am flying to Colorado Springs, CO tomorrow for a second interview for a new career. It would mean up rooting my family to move from West Texas where I have lived my entire life. One issue is that my daughter will be a senior next year so she is not very excited. Can't say that I blame her.

What I want to know is just general info about the town. Good areas to look at housing, utility and food costs higher/lower than average. State sales tax along 4%?
Overall economy. I guess the good, bad, and ugly of the place. Just looking for some local knowledge.

Thanks brothers,

One thing I had heard about Colorado, and maybe I'm living under a rock here, but kids can choose which 3 months they get off for break, not just June, July August like it is here. It's semester based for grade school. Can someone from CO confirm that?

I'm born and raised in CO and never heard the "choose the vacation thing" maybe in some private schools? Was just in Colorado springs for 3 days and it's my favorite city on the Eastern slope of the state. I lived there for a couple years about ten years ago. I can't speak on the specifics about cost of living, gas is about 10 - 15 cents higher there than out here on the plains, depends on the area of town for rent and mortgages I'm sure. My advice would be to search the internet for specifics on cost of living and whatnot. I've lived in both Amarillo and Colorado Springs and it wouldn't even be a second of consideration if I was choosing between the two. Just my .02. Too bad we came back yesterday instead of staying another night, would've gladly shown you around and taken you to a couple shops and enjoyed a stick! Best of luck!

Ok. Thanks. Maybe private schools yeah. I just remember that when I was there back in January, there were a bunch of teenagers with parents and I asked why they weren't in school. That's the answer I got.

That may be true in the bigger cities, a way of controlling how many kids are in school at one particular time or something. Hell idk, just because I haven't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't so lol.

I presume you meant State income tax, but if not, there's that, too...

Like you, I'm from west TX, and personally, I've really enjoyed the time spent in CO Springs. Beautiful town with the rockies off to the west and has a touristy, but nice little "old town" area. Certainly has a small-town vibe to it, but less than an hour from Denver.

Also, have a good friend (from Central TX, but he went to grad school with me at Tech) that will be moving out that way toward the end of the year, and I'm sure he'd like to get together for a smoke.

Best of luck!

Thank you all for the great input. I am currently back in the airport but really enjoyed my brief visit. I am sure there will be another or two in my near future to help aid in the decision. Seems like WAY more to do in ones free time in CO than Amarillo.

No matter where I end up, CO or remaining in Amarillo, would love to meet up and smoke a fine cigar anytime we can.

I have yet to meet a fellow BOTL in person so I need to change that anyhow.

I love the Colorado front range! There is a ton of great stuff to do there. If my wife did not have family here that is probably where I would be living. If you enjoy live music there is a great scene in Denver and many of the surrounding areas. Redrocks is probably my favorite concert venue on the planet, and is less than an hour from springs. Great BnM's in Denver as well. Sounds better than the heat in Texas to me.

I'd be very careful moving there if I were you... I've seen a handful of Dog The Bounty Hunter episodes shot in Colorado Springs area and there's some messed up people there!?! :headroll:

The Springs is a nice town. I consider it a large bedroom community vs its larger neighbor up north.

State income tax hovers around 5%. If its like my area, property taxes hover around 1%. Schools are dependent on the district you live in. If you go private, you shouldnt be disappointed.

Tobacco taxes are kinda ridiculous here though :(

The libtards have taken over this state and it will be the next California very soon......don't leave Texas
Isn't that the truth, lived here all my life(5th generation native) and this state is not the same state I grew up in.

Hey fellahs, there is a debate forum for that kinda mug slinging, you know?

This thread was meant to help a brother understand a possible new town, not make disparaging remarks about political ideologies.
