Thinking about adding a 10mm to my pistol collection. Anyone shoot the 10mm? How is the recoil? and would you feel comfortabe with a 10mm in the woods? where it's bear and cougar country.

I also hear it's a very accurate round but a little pricey to shoot.

Any other input would be welcome

Thanks

Reloads are the cheapest way to go, but that's for steel target shooting. I used to burn through about 1000 rounds of 9mm every time I went shooting, factory loads would have broke me but the reloads were cheap as hell.

I have a Glock 29 and really like it. The recoil is quite managable and is probably the most powerful auto loading round. If you're serious about shooting it makes sense to to reload yourself but you can also get factory reloads at a pretty good price. Double has a variety of great loads for everything from hunting to practice so they're definately worth checking out. The 10mm often gets bad rap because for a long time there weren't any factory loads that took advantage of it's full potential. I think it's the most versatile auto pistol cartridge.

I don't think the 10mm ever found the special place it was supposed to find. Be careful about what pistol you choose, most of the early 10mm's were not designed for the round, and were 45 frames pressed into service for the newest thing. Glocks are good, don't get a 1911 style. 10mm today is not as strong of a factory load as when they first came out, and are not as hard on handguns. I worked as a gunsmith back when they first came out and saw way to many pistols breaking parts.

If you are looking for a hotter handgun, consider the 357Sig swap with a 40cal barel, or a 460 Rowland top for a 1911 as other good choices. With either you get a cheap easy to find range option. The 460 Rowland is better round than most for large game, but no pistol that dosn't way as much as a large rifle is a good idea to go looking for bear with.

I'm not down on the 10mm as a whole, the Glocks are good and if you can find some reasonable range ammo or don't shoot often, and have a need for magnum power. For me I have a 400 Corbon barel when I want a a magnum auto loader and can practice at the range for a fair price with 45's. Don't still recomend the 400, great round, but is being replaced by the 460 Roland.

I love my glock 20 thats for sure. Ammo's a byatch but the thing shoots as straight as a wire. Fabulous pistol. And... you can swap the barrel in these bad boys if you want to fire something else. Cheers!

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not looking to hunt bears and Cougars. But I was looking for a semi Auto that I could take with me for Hiking and backpacking. Sounds like the 10mm is a good choice of caliber.

Mitch:

I heard that the old colt Delta 10mm's had a lot of problems. But the newer 1911's are okay since they have had time to correct the issues that the earlier ones had. Unfortunatly I have smaller hands. So the G20 dosent fit my hands very well.
