Just curious what people have experienced in the way of Duty/taxes added on to their shipment from the US? I know it varies from province to province as well. Im in Ontario.

Also not sure if they base it on the cost of your shipment, or is there a set fee?

I would imagine once the cigars hits customs the duties/taxes would be based on the declared value and content description ie. Cigars/Gift on the packing slip. I would say at least 13% but as tobacco has specific legislations I wouldn't be surprised if it's more.

Any input from our more experienced Brothers would be greatly appreciated thanks!

I am a fellow Canuck from Ontario & let me tell you sir.....our government can eat my $H!T. They charge roughly 70-75% Tobacco Tariff on top of the declared value, which includes the shipping charges, on all incoming tobacco products from the U.S. or any other country. You also get hit with duties & brokerage fees. My first order from a U.S. based online retailer cost me $40 with shipping & I ended up paying another $70 in Tariff, Duties & Brokerage Fees. Complete Bull$H!T!

My advice....if you have any botl's, friends or family in the States have your orders shipped to them & they can re-package them & ship them U.S.P.S. to you. Make sure they identify the contents as candles or collectible stamps or something. There may be a few overseas retailers that will ship unmarked packages via private shipping companies where the extra fees are defeated.....but most U.S. retailers will declare the contents & you will get screwed for the additional charges.

Just my experience.

If only they - the government - were reasonable.

I'm in BC. Last order was for 7 boxes - the company were good and put low declared values on each and shipped individually.

6 boxes arrived without problems. The last had a declared value of $16. The customs adjusted the value to $60 (it was a 12 box). Then proceeded to add handling fees, taxes, taxes on the taxes etc. Finally ending at $138 of additions if I remember correctly.

So $60 gets you around $140 in BC.

Every time I travel outside Canada I return carrying my limit, and anyone else's that's with me that doesn't use their limit!

Good luck with your package.

My friend and I have successfully ordered several shipments from a US retailer and gotten them without duty added. He still lives in Newfoundland. All of the shipments were sent person to person and they label them custom art supplies or handmade candles.

PM me and I can tell you the company, so as not to post it and get them in trouble. He called and verified their shipping arangements beforehand too.
