So I was on campus today and seen a sign that stated ASU is a tobacco free campus. I am thinking what the hell I am a 48 year old Papa. Why should they be able to tell me I cannot smoke a cigar. I can see that they do not want the young freshman to pick up my bad habit. It is like I always said college is such a liberal influenced place to be. I am set in my ways and they have tried to change me. The field that I am in Social Work forget it. I am glad I work with like minded veterans. I need to find out if I can smoke a cigar in the park across the street.

I am not going to lie, I wish my campus was smoke free when I was there. Every building you walked into you first had to walk thru the force field of cigarette smokers standing right next to the doors. Sometimes there were more than a dozen. Of course cigarette smell and cigar smell are 2 completely different things.

Agreed with Rac, every person would hang out by the door and smoke a crap cig. They finally made a smoker area about 100 ft from the front door but I guess that was 99 feet to far to go for a smoke.

Also I think just about ever school institution, gov building and the like have been smoke free for a while, no?

I THINK I've seen "This is a tobacco free campus" signs somewhere here. I KNOW I see people smoking cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and joints on a daily basis.

People don't smoke by the doors and such. But there's lots of people smoking in the larger, open areas.

Yes, the buildings are smoke free. There is no smoking 25 feet from a entrance to a building. However, there is no smoking or chewing tabocco on campus. I just do not believe that people should be able to told what bad habits they should have. Oh well times are changing donot know if they are for the best.

SDSU went this route two years ago, right before I started the masters program. I had a nice spot all picked out the last semester of my senior year, knowing I'd be back in the fall... It was on the ridge, overlooking the freeway, 10 feet above a parking structure, and about 100 yards from where anyone would be walking, let alone a building. Showed up on the first day of the fall semester to warning signs all over campus. If anyone was smoking out side the smoking section, SDPD would be dishing out tickets. The "smoking section" was a concrete bench in the middle of the parking lot, with no shade... Man was I pissed.

Oregon State is "tobacco free" or at least smoke free but the library esentially provides dip cups for us college students that liked to partake in that form of tobacco while studying and people smoke cigarettes all over campus

WSU has butt buckets by all the big lecture halls. They will make you move if you are within 25 feet of an entrance but you can smoke almost anywhere. I have smoked cigars laying in the grass between classes a good few times with nobody showing signs of being troubled. We have more displeased people from the drunk kids running around campus at 2pm on a Tuesday.

I work at a college and always smoked my cigars while working outside, our signs went up yesterday. Its BS. they aint gonna stop the students from smoking, all this will do is make me find a place to have my "lunch" break and not be seen. I agree that they shouldnt be able to use communist means of control to keep me from enjoying something that they dont like.
As for moving it farthur away from doors, heck yeah. but not eliminate it altogether. besides, did any one evr see a nursing class let out? Its like watching a forest fire step out of a building....

Soon the entire US will be made smoke free and then the government can wisely find a way to tax the free air we breath. Liberty is a dying breed.

Well I'm Canadian and that has begun for us. I live in Ontario and the colleges started with the rule you couldn't smoke within 10m from an entrance roughly 30ft and change. Then they moved it to 30m so 100ft.

Now when I go to night school there are designated areas to smoke. So I sat outside before class enjoying a cigar and they tried giving me a ticket cause they said cigars aren't to be smoked on campus. I just walked away cause I thought it was ridiculous but what do we want from rent-a-cops.

NickThePyro alluded to what I was thinking... a campus that is smoke free should also be dry, IMO. When I was in college, there were crazy alcohol related issues... my college was wet.

I agree with a dry campus ASU is known for its parties. More kids get killed from drinking and driving also texting and driving the my cigar smoke. I cannot even have a chew. Hell I have been chewing longer then most students have been on this earth. (35 years). Our freedoms are slipping away slowly but they will be gone one day. Oh well who am I to say how my life should be lived.
