Some people don't even know they have sensitive info on laptops until it's too late.indyrob said:Thanks for the heads up Todd! I can't believe that someone was dumb enough to take sensitive info like that HOME.
When I called Equifax they let me set up a "flag" where as if anyone tries to apply for anything that requires a credit check in my name they call me to verify it is me.Kingston said:From the FTC:

You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of the big three every 12 months.
The website for this is www.annualcreditreport.com (this is NOT a commercial company, it's the website the big three have set up to comply with the law)
or you can call 1-877-322-8228. I think the website has been down for maintenance lately.
It can take time for things to appear on your report, but getting a credit freeze is usually free if you have been a victim of identity theft.
As usual, check your statements.
I take my laptop home every day from work. Lets me get things done at home, (and surf the web on my patio).Wasch_24 said:Just seems weird that the his house was "broken into" the night he had this laptop at home.
I did the same thing. This also allows you a free credit report within the 90-day flagging period. I called the Fed to actually speak to someone. Even though my time was during and after Vietnam, they verified that my information was stolen. The records appear to have been in this format: name, branch, d.o.b. and SSAN; in short, the keys to the kingdom, so to speak. I checked with the SSA to see about changing numbers in this case. No dice! They will only let you change your number after your life has been completely ruined, and even then you must prove that someone has done and is STILL doing you harm. Talk about b.s. . .Now that the .gov has their hooks into you via the SSAN which pervades all facets of your life, they have no intention of letting you change the holy number. . .Wasch_24 said:When I called Equifax they let me set up a "flag" where as if anyone tries to apply for anything that requires a credit check in my name they call me to verify it is me.
Yep...I am one of the 26.5 million records that were stolen.cvm4 said:Did this happen to you Todd I'm sure not a Vet. but good on ya for the heads up.
Until all the news reports tell them.Wasch_24 said:I have been told that there isn't anything I can do to be proactice about it that I haven't already done...i.e. watching things closely as well as flagging my credit report.
I have seen a few reports stating the theives might not even know what they have.
