And I'm back...

Had a great time in the 2nd city of sin. Will definitely take the wife back in a year or two. Here' the highlights for those who care...

Had chicken and andouille gumbo with almost every meal. The best was by far at the Gumbo Shop. Best shrimp po' boy was from The Pearl. Had 3 different ones. We tried to get into Mothers but the line was 'bout 100 yards long at 11:30 and we was hungry. Had a cafe au latte and beignets from Cafe du Monde. Did the boiled crawfish...good but not a "gotta have em" type food. Had the best bloody mary ever at Masperos. They were out of this world. Got effed on hurricanes at Pat O'briens. Ate at Paul Prudhommes place, K Paul. Very very good. Had 3 cheese stuffed blackend pork chop. Wanted the stuffed soft shell crab but they were out.

Lost my a$$ at Harrah's casino. Was never up more than $20 at one time. All I did was give, give, give. You think i woulda learned. Won a lot more playing poker with the boys by the hotel pool.

Smoked a CC Monte Tubo, Torana 1916 cameroon, DPG Blue label, Tat red, Tat white, Camacho Diplomatico, Opus, short story. I've developed a smokers cough.

Listened to a fabulous jass quartet playing in the middle of the street. This woman played the alto sax and sang and she was phenomenal. She had 2 little girls with her that were asleep on an old fold up sunbathing beach chair. It was a moment for me...imagining growing up listening to your mother play great jazz in the middle of the streets of the french quarter all your life. It's how many of the greats remember ther child hood...listening to jazz on the streets, playing jazz in the streets. It's the kind of life you only here people talk about, but i saw people living it. It's not that it's a great life, but it's a life you only here about and it's a life that isn't so common anymore. It's a life that in today's world is almost extinct. But i saw it and it was like stepping back in time and it was the feeling of what New Orleans and the French Quarter is founded on. And then i mozied on into a bar and heard a trumpet player and his band play "When the Saints Go Marching In" The quentissential song for Nawlins.

What i missed but will do next time...the Garden District, Emerils orignial restarurant Nolas, the riverboat tour, good blues music, po'boy at Mothers, The Court of Two Sisters, winning at the casino.

Like i said, I'll go back with the wife and we'll definitely have to stay in one of those nice hotels right in the quarter. Ours was a 2 minute walk from Canal and Bourbon St. but i like the thought of staying right in the quarter.

I saw my first real stripper boobs in the french Quarter. I was like 10 at the time. Man that was a good 15 seconds.

Yeah, a bartender told us it was only 20 minutes away. We were drinking our 2nd bloody mary at 9 am when he told us that, so you can see what was on our agenda...it wasn't golf.

There was also the semifinals of the women's NCAA basketball tournament in town...didn't make that either.

I was really only there for 2 full days. Got in a 2 am on Thursday/Friday and left at 6 am on Sunday. I wanted to experience the quarter. I'll be going to the Memorial Tournament next month here in Columbus, OH.

For me, id say it's a place you want to go and experience it all and that'd be enough. no need to do it twice. I'd say the quarter is big enough for maybe 4 days, but that's it. After i go again for another 2-3 days, i'll probably never go back. for the kind of money i spent, i can go to a lot nicer places. The food would be the only thing that would take me back repeatedly, but then again, i can make half of it just as good now, and i'm getting recipes for the the other half.

I take most of that back...upon reflection, i'd like to take just the wife for 3-4 days and then i'd take the kid with us another time, but not until she's at least 13 yrs old. Old enough for her to appreciate the history and authenticity of the music. She also has to go inside by 8 pm. No wandering around after dark seeing bourbon street at its finest.

My wife just got back from a Bachelorette party there. She said the same thing. We should go, because we'd do and see things that she didn't get a chance to this time around (she doesn't need to see the clubs again, and I don't care to see them a first time), but we would only need a weekend and would probably never need to go back.

I miss NO. My family lived down there for 20 years and Katrina blew them up North for good they say. Glad you had a good time.
