I've seen a few posts on here lately regarding flavor and it got me wondering about some of the weird flavors I've tasted.

The other day I was smoking a Cusano P1 maduro and about half way thru it started to taste like wet cardboard. Couldn't finish it. Any ideas of what it could be other than it just being a poor smoke?

There are many variables that could lead to this. What where the outside conditons? Was it humid, maybe you were smoking too fast, or maybe there was a bad spot in the cigar.

I was smoking a T52 last night and as soon as I light it up I could tell something was different, the ash was even a darker gray. This was the 4th one I had smoked in the week. I did not finish it as it started to get some chemical/or wierd taste.

It's hard to imagine that anything foreign could be accidentally rolled into a cigar, but I can testify that I once found a large feather in a package of Beechnut. You know the tobacco drying barns are pretty much open and birds most likely roost in some. No doubt you would know if a feather was in your cigar. :argh:

The only MB3 I have tried had the worst amonia flavor and smell...it tasted like it was pissed on...no joke. I even had my wife take a puff to see if I was just having a weird moment...she concured...tossed it less than a half inch in.

Interesting. My Illusione 68 tasted markedly different than the one I had just the other day. I assume the first one had rested while the second was from a recently opened box at my B&M.

The variables to a bad (and even a GOOD) taste in any cigar are numerous:

Humidity of cigar
humidity present where you are smoking
bad roll
bad binder leaf
bad filler leaf
sick period
"bad apple"...That one cigar that tastes off out of the many you have smoked
mood
palate
what you ate recently
dehydration (tends to intensify the nicotine rush)

...The list goes on!

The fun part is paying attention to these variables, and learning.

Back in May, I rolled into Casa Fuente bought two horrible tasting cigars. The first was a Casa Fuente, and the second was an Opus X. Both were off, and I tossed them after smoking no more than half of them. Thought it was me, so I fired up a Cojonu 2003 at the bar and it was fine. I guess s**t happens sometimes. On top of that I found out the waitresses only wear the black outfits now...wtf. Overall a bad night at Casa Fuente. At least the Mojitos were good!
