Yesterday we had a memorial service for Dad here at my house so I was busy all weekend between getting ready for that and keeping up with farmers markets and mail order. Checking in this morning I see I have a lot of threads to catch up on!
The service for Dad can only be described in one word. Perfect!
I had a friend help with arranging everything and preparing the food. She did a wonderful job. The food was fantastic and she managed to make my house look like someone with taste and style lived there rather than the unkempt, time challenged coffee roaster abode that it actually is. Everything was beautiful and it looked like it was professionally catered.
Another long time friend who is a Methodist minister came and did the service itself. He's a great guy with a great sense of humor. The service was very moving and he managed to keep it light with his off-brand humor which is sort of Robin Williams-like. He even kind of looks like him! It meant a lot to me that he volunteered to do the service despite the fact that he's still recovering from a kidney transplant. He spent the entire afternoon with us and the only thing he would accept as payment was a RyJ Churchill A/T.
My nephew, who inherited my father's musical talent, brought his guitar and played a song the he wrote himself. It was very moving and so appropriate. This kid is going places!
The weather couldn't have been better if we had ordered it special. The afternoon was spent with friends and family milling about the house and yard, eating, drinking, remembering my father and catching up on current events. Nephews (more than one inherited the musical gene that seemed to skip my generation) played and sang more music.
All in all, a perfect send off, exactly the way Dad would have wanted it.
