I need assistance in getting up-to-speed in learning "proper" cigar evaluations:
I plan on posting my (unsophisticated) reviews on this thread. Please feel free to critique my reviews and add your perceptions, so I can expedite my verbiage and hone my terminology. I'd prefer to keep this thread focused on MY ratings and YOUR interpretations of MY perceptions, as well as YOUR notes on the gars I report on.
*** Please PM your recommendations for other gars, as thread drift could quickly get out of hand, stunting my learning process and slowing my efficacy in posting to other gar threads. I'd really appreciate keeping this thread "pure." Many Thanks! ***

I tried a gar that Dubels so generously bestowed upon me:
The Flor de Oliva:
Tasty. I'd guess "left of medium" on the strength scale. Nice easy light and comfortable "draw." I'm understanding the term "earthy" now. I was getting a flavor I narrowed down to the aftertaste one gets after eating the skin of a baked potato. But not the flavor that you'd get from a skin that had the flavor (and aroma) I associate with rich soil. Great consistent smoke up until the last 1/3, then it got harsh and unappetizing. I suspect this was an artifact of having several relights (I was running errands).
The other gar smoked today:
A Fuente "Curly Head" purchased online. I was expecting it to be a nice "surprise" cigar, (since they were made from other Fuente "remnant" tobaccos) with loads of flavors. Easy light, nice draw... Totally uneventful; no classic Fuente flavors. Not much flavor at all. I endured it through the first half, then gave up. I wouldn't even consider this as a "yard gar." I was expecting SOMETHING pleasurable. No go. Their other cheapie, "Its a Boy" gars (same price point) was dandy in comparison.
Cheers!
Joe
