Well, finally decided to take the plunge and buy a GPS unit. What do you guys suggest? Looking for something easy and that I won't have to replace (though it seems you can just update maps etc). I tend to like the Garmin units but they seem to have a large range. Are the higher priced ones worth the extra cost? G1

I have a garmin that cost $200 (on sale) and a tomtom that cost $250.
The tomtom is far more accurate than the Garmin.
And the tomtom allows you to ad roads if it's not in the database.
The garmin only has released updates.
It's been about a year since I got both devices and the garmin is way behind in terms of updates. Hell a road thats been here since around 98 is still not in the database.

I have a Garmin nuvi. I am not a big fan of it, but I really don't know anything about the other devices out there. The touchpad dos not always pick up movements, and when it does it does not always perform the action I am looking to perform. It does not allow you edit the route easily. It was a gift, so I did not research it.

It is fairly basic... So if that is what you are looking for then this could be an option.

I think you can buy lifetime updates from TomTom on the purchase that you can't on Garmin. (you have to buy each update from Garmin)
But I ended up buying a Garmin Nuvi anyway as Amazon usually has some pretty good deals making it cheaper if I needed to buy a new one in a couple years. It was under $100

I do however have the same issues as SlipperyPete above, the touchpad is sometimes lacking response.

There's a decent looking tom tom at costco, the xxl 550. Lifetime traffic and maps so set there. Good to hear about the tom tom's being a little better with maps than garmin. I was looking at a garmin unit and they were the only one's I've actually ever have used and that was with a rental. Will probably go with the tt with the recommendations above. I use the app on my iphone but its just too much of a pia to punch in all the data holding the phone then looking at the phone when driving. G1

I have a Magellan.....and love it. My brother-in-law has had two Garmins and hated them both. He now own's a Magellan......if you get the 4352 or better unit you get FREE traffic updates for life......very good around large cities, shows all traffic tie-ups.
