FWIW (and it may be worth nothing), I use Riedel cordial (their Cognac Hennessy) glasses that I keep in the freezer. It gives the bourbon a slight chill. Granted, the chilling doesn't last anywhere near as long as ice would but I don't have to worry about ice melting and watering down my drink.

If I am making a cocktail, then I will use a large tumbler with ice. But I like glasses that really concentrate the vapors at the top of the bowl. I wonder what Schnapps glasses would be like for drinking bourbon...

While I'm certainly no bourbon expert, personally while sipping on Rowans Creek I just use the short whisky glass freebies out of holiday packages. Haven't noticed a difference other than aesthetics.

+1 on the freebies. I have glasses with fluted out sides, straight sides, dimpled sides etc sides and really don't notice any difference with the experience. I'm of the ol adage that if ain't broke don't spend money on more. Just my 0.02

I use a small thick heavy rocks glass. Seems to work well when drinking any whisky neat.

Freebies from gift boxes as well. Letting the rye or bourbon open (10-15 mins) up does more for the Whiskey IMO than anything else.

I use the Riedel Vinum whiskey glass and drink my bourbon neat. Really enjoy the spirit this way and no longer chill or dilute with ice.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1385517711.395487.jpg

+1 stopped using ice; then water. neat is the way too go.

Edit: I love a nice set of rock glass more than anything else. i get weird and creative with beer glasses (collect different ones) :)

I agree...I stopped using anything other than the natural taste..no water, ice, etc. Glasses tend to be a gimmick other than what one gets from the shape...heavy bottom and fluted top to get a nuance of the vapor it brings. I like the snifter myself....owing no allegiance to brand but the shape is what I like when drinking any whiskey, bourbon, liqueurs...I love the smell of it before I actually taste it.

I bury my nose deep in the bowels of the snifter to take in the vapor prior to sipping. I pick up a lot of the notes by doing both. I really think the snifter is the way to go. Prior to the Riedels I had standard highball glasses and drank the spirit with ice. No more.

Now trying to decide what my next bourbon purchase will be.

Once you go with a Glencairn for any kind of whiskey, I don't see how you could go back.

Maybe some guys feel awkward holding a glass that small, but I say just think of it as an expensive shot glass.

Its the best for nosing if you drink it neat imo.

Although it's not always considered a "manly" drink and I don't think I have ever heard any even attempt to pair it with a cigar, I also really enjoy good Sake. That's another reason I like the whiskey glass from Glencairn or the Cognac/Hennessy glass from Riedel - two totally different alcohols, same set of glasses to enjoy it with. And I've never complained about drinking tequila out of them, either.

Definitely, I mean im drinking vodka and seltzer out of a heavy duty beer mug right now, ha.

But as for straight whiskey, you could obviously use anything but what out there concentrates the smells like the Glencairn.

Personally, I would use anything, but I happen to have a Glencairn and that is miles above any other glasses I own.

I do use a highball for old fashioned's and what not.

my favorite glass and I think it's cuz it reminds of the one my grandfather use to use
and my other favorite just like the weight and feel. I think I got it from mikasa and they have a ton glasses that aren't expensive

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...
Love that square base 40, it just looks strong, simple.
I was truly made aware of some of my OCD tendencies out at a bar a few years back; The base of the low ball I was served in was pentagonal and I found myself messing with it all evening, constantly turning it, trying to square it up with the napkin. After I realized what I was doing I started to pay attention at other bars/restaurants. Crazy! I wish some places would use glasses like yours!
I currently have the Riedels pictured earlier and I like to use them for my port as well.
My wife and I attended a blind tasting for Riedel wine glasses years back and I was totally sold on glass shape. I thought for sure it was a bunch of crap, but they made a believer out of me. I'd definitely recommend going to a tasting if they're ever in your area (check the website) and I've seen them advertise wine tastings, spirits tastings, and beer tastings.
Added benefit, the one we went to you kept the glasses you used and the cost of the event was about half the retail on the glasses.
