90 miles of commuting a day has taken its toll. I need an AWD vehicle. I've narrowed it down to three late model used cars at my local dealer. Nissan X-Terra, Subaru Forester, and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (4 door model). The Jeep is very cool, but the Subaru makes the most sense. I am not that car savvy, so any help would be appreciated.

Do you need 4WD? I had a 4WD Tahoe, never used it. It got less MPG. Just think about why you might need it. Or are you talking about AWD?

Subaru, all the way. The best AWD on the planet. Go with the Outback though.

You should see a picture on the snow covered mountain road that I just drove up 3 hours ago. The Chevy Blazer behind me wasn't so lucky.

Edit: scratch what I said below...

Yeah, if you want advice you need to tell us why you want an AWD vehicle? The only thing you say is that you are driving 90 miles... with just that info, you should not be getting an AWD because of gas mileage.

If you care about gas mileage, do not get the Xterra. Things might have changed, but when I looked into them a few years ago they were total gas hogs. The Subaru would definitely be my choice if you want a good overall vehicle considering gas mileage, safety, reliability etc.

Subaru's in my opinion are bulletproof. I've seen many on the road with well over 300k on them and still running. I think the boxer style engine improves lubrication. A friend of mine brother works for Jeep and said he see's the Wranglers in there all the time. That's why my friend hasn't got one. another friend of mine has an X-Terra haven't heard him complain. I think it's a good truck but do you need it. For 90 miles of commuting a day I'd go with the Subaru. For off roading the Jeep 1st and than the Xterra.

You could get a nice used Toyota Landcruiser for pretty cheap. Not too great on the gas mileage but everything else is pretty much indestructible.

I bought a Subaru Outback about a year ago, and I am quite happy with it. I went from a 4WD Explorer, and thought that I might miss the size, but I don't. My German Shepherd fits easily in the back, which was my main criteria. It handles well in the snow, feels solid, and it gets great gas mileage (28-29 MPG highway). It is my first 4 cylinder car, but it doesn't feel underpowered. Thumbs up.

We bought an 06 Saturn Vue AWD to tow behind the motor home and love it. It is vvery stable and fun to drive with the same drive train as the Honda Accura MDX; although detuned a little with just single exhaust. This is a vehicle that I am sorry to see go by the wayside but by the time we need a new vehicle there will be all kinds of new technology. I would recommend this vehicle to you to put on your list even though they are not built anymore. Repairs, if you need anything beyond preventive maintenance can be done at any GM dealership.

Subaro, they work great here in Sweden with our extreme cold weather and snow. IF it is available the diesel engines are a much better choice. You get much better mileage and more torque when you need it. Also they look pretty good.
