I'd like to bundle some of the cigars in my humidor with cheese cloth mesh type food grade cotton "socks" used for the long term curing of hams and sausages. Does anyone see a problem with this, besides it just being ugly?

Any other suggestions to organize the humidors without taking up space with more boxes?

Good question. I've seen pics of bundles that appear to be wrapped in wax paper or parchment paper. I haven't done this yet but probably should.
Any recommendations @Marc L ? I seem to recall you, or maybe @blisscigarco, having wrapped up a group or two of rolls...

I'm ordering and have a lot of 5-10 packs, still sampling a lot of different cigars. Space is limited at this point and as I dig around looking for today's smoke they get jumbled around and mixed together. I really am overloaded in the humidors (B&M gal said that is impossible!) but see it as only a short term problem. Once I find the stuff I like I can order larger Q's and keep them better organized. I want to bundle them and put a tag on the bundle with date and description. I find the bands alone do not provide enough information when trying to select a cigar. I could just keep them in the shipping wrappers but I would think we want them out of that plastic as soon as possible

Thanks

Why is it weird. The trays cost me about $5 each built out of recycled cigar boxes from a B&M and 1x3 cured oak. The are made to fit in the 28q Island Breeze ice chests ($19 each) I'm using that also fit into my temperature controlled, modified refrigerator for the heat of the summer. The ice chests are portable so when I evacuate for a hurricane or wifey kicks me out of the house (bet you can't imagine that happening?) they go with me.

Problem I was having was that the trays are getting overfilled and the cigars where falling out whenever I went digging for a smoke. Now the stuff I want to smoke in the next couple of weeks is sitting as singles in the top tray and the wrapped cigars are in the bottom of the ice chest safely tucked away. I have been using sticky labels to date the cigars but when I order 5 or 10 packs it just seems easier to label the pouch.

It's weird by definition because it is not normal.

If it works for you, have at it. For me, it's too much trouble. But then again, I keep most of my sticks in boxes and the ones that are not in boxes are just randomly in trays. Don't much care when I bought them.

Also.... I would not use cured oak for cigar storage. That's gonna mess with your cigar aromas and flavors.

My biggest problem is going to be high humidity and high heat control. It was 89% this morning. In the summer when I'm gone my house gets into the mid 80s. The refrigerator will reduce the humidity to the point that the beads in the coolidors can maintain at the 65 - 70% level. I can set the refrigerators to run between 65 and 70 degrees.

I was concerned about the oak but the pieces I am using have a very light, clean aroma. I'm layering the trays with scrap Spanish Cedar and splints from the B&M. I bought a bunch of Spanish Cedar trays on line and picked up some cedar cigar boxes that will replace some of the trays as the new orders arrive.

To answer your original question, aside from being ugly I think it's a great solution for what you are trying to accomplish. As long as it works, why worry about what it looks like?

Well what has changed is that my friend NoGills2 found a local, reasonably priced source for both Spanish cedar and large cigar boxes. I'm not convinced that the little bit of oak I'm currently using for the walls of the shelves will have any long term effect on the dog rockets I'm smoking but I want to rebuild the shelves/boxes anyway to fit the coolers better and $10 dollars of Spanish Cedar won't break the budget.

Mesh nets keep bundles together and help make good use of available space. Large labels are easy to read and I don't handle the cigars as much looking for a specific smoke. Bundles are placed in long term storage and singles I intend to smoke soon are placed in cedar shelves in the coolidor by my desk. I'm sure eventually I'll find a better way but at this point the nets solve problems.

When I have boll weevil problems I'll just dust the cigars with sevin dust.

Actually, that's why I have the ham bags. Also the hygrometer/thermo, refrigerator temperature controller and spare refrigerator. The principals of aging and storage are pretty much the same.
