First gorgive me if this is covered somewhere already.

CCs that come in cardboard packs, should they be removed from the packs for aging?

I dont know if its the right answer....

But I dont remove them...

Of course, I dont "age" for really long periods of time either.. most stuff I hide away in the humi lasts 6 months to a year tops... occasionally Ill put something special away for 2 years or more.. but its not all that common...

I have found carboard packs in B&M's that are 3+ years old however.. (tubos mostly though).. with no problems at all...

this. they are stored (and sometimes forgotten about) at retail level in that packaging. if you have any worries, just box them up in another box.

I tried to find Jfire's answer on this because I could have sworn he just posted about this for some one else. Maybe he will chime in.

This is definitely a personal preference kinda thing. If you plan on smoking the cigars within a year or two I wouldn't worry. But for longer term storage I would take them out of the cardboard packs... try to find an empty slb box of the same cigar if you can, or put them in another box. Some people claim they can get a faint taste of the cardboard after years of aging. I can't but my smell/taste is terrible compared to others. I have smoked aged CoLa's and Cohiba CE's with at least 7 years of age on them in the cardboard packs and loved them. But I also put my CCE's in a slb box once I bought them for longer storage.

So do what you want, but it won't hurt them much at all.

People always comment that cabs of cuban cigars are better tasting than cigars from cardboard boxes.I agree,I have aged my sticks in cabs since the mid 80's.I am convinced that cigars age better and are more fragrant when aged in cabs, and I feel that the reason is that they are all touching and form a larger mass, also that the spanish cedar adds a dimension of flavor.Rollers age their sticks naked in bundles, good enough for me.

Obviously this indicates that I remove the cello from non-cuban sticks as well.

Rotate them a couple of times a year, and take one from the second or third row to smoke, the top row will always be dryer on one side.

I would agree with Nacho 100% and only add that 5 years is not going to hurt CCs in cardboard. But will also protect the cigars if you don't have the same box of a Marca. So what I'm saying is if you have say 2 5packs of Cohiba CE that wouldn't fill up the 25 ct SLB I'd just leave them alone.

What about the cardboard packaging that comes on the outside of boxes? Say like the 8-9-8 or LGC? Do you guys leave them on or just take the box out of the cardboard and put that in the humi?

I figured in that case it wouldn't effect the cigars much since its only in contact with the wood box?

I have several 898s, Sir Winston's that have the shipping Cardboard still on them. When I decide to start smoking them in another 5 years I might throw away the shipping cardboard. Not only that the box code on those Vitolas are on that shipping container, not the wood box.

I personally get rid of all outside boxes of cigars that I will be smoking in the near term. I buy to smoke so I'm not worried about resell value... I simply cut out the box code and put it inside the box and I note the code in my spreadsheet. For more expensive cigars that I plan on aging awhile before I crack into the box, I keep the outside boxes.

Personally never smoked anything really old that was stored in cardboard. Last year I had my daughter pull 2 Cohiba Sig IV out of my cooler and label them 1 and 2. 1 was from a cab and 1 was still in the cardboard. I liked the cardboard one better and that has continued through both boxes. I dont have a scientific reason. Probably just one box better than the other. I have plenty still in cardboard and these are my smoke now stock. Plenty of slb also that are my smoke in 3-5 years stock. Which also reminds me that i probably need to restock soon.

That's pretty much it, Mike. I've had great Cohiba lanceros from a box, great Cohiba lanceros from cardboard...and crappy ones from both as well. Kind of a crapshoot.

Ryan I plan on smoking all my inventory as well. Hell it's stuff I love. God willing something happens I'd like them to be intact as possible in case the family needs the money. Life insurance aside I would like the cigars to sell for what they should or slightly higher. For me this makes sense. Maybe over thinking a hobby. But a expensive one at that.

Don't worry those kind of thought have crossed my mind. I know I don't have a Jfire collection but there is some money just sitting there. We actually just talked about this on Labor day, if someone broke in I bet they would pass right by grabbing my 2 desk tops and cooler, but if they knew the value of the cigars they may just scoop them up.
