Hey guys,

So I am new to the whole CC world. I've had a few that have been gifted to me that were picked up abroad, but I want to get myself a sampler to see what I really like before committing to a box. I found a site (I won't mention which one) that I believe is reputable which offers sample packs. I emailed and asked if there was any way I could get sticks from older boxes and they replied they would try but most likely nothing would be before '2015 at best'. So my main question is, can I smoke these and get a good idea of the smoke even if they are a little fresh? I'll definitely let them acclimate for a month or two first either way.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I've dipped into a few 2016 boxes recently and they were pretty good. I'd imagine they'll round out a little with more time, but they were still tasty. I've gotten single before and its always hard to age them too long since you want to smoke them to see what they're like, but I try to way a couple months for anything that's under a year of age.

Keep telling yourself this, with that tribe of 5 you are going to be taming for a long time :D
The length of time wont be that great, cause they're all so close together! There's only a 6yr spread between all five.

It's just the amount of taming that has to happen all at once...

6 year spread at 18 years (minimum) to tame, you're looking at a minimum of 24 years of total taming time

You should be able to smoke and enjoy most of them if you can give them 12 months from the box code date. But keep in mind that almost all regular production cigars will improve beyond that point. So if you like a smoke a year old from the box code, chances are you will really love it 3-5 yrs out. I cannot speak to RE or EL smokes. You would have to ask one of the many ballers on this site about that.

Crossing the 12 month benchmark is just a general guide. They will round out with more rest, but just let them sit a couple weeks and then start trying them out. Samplers are good way to get you familiar with the marcas & there's really no use in saving regular production singles for any extended period of time. See what you like, then keep an eye out for box sales or guys looking to do splits.

I've had good luck smoking Hoyo Epi-2's and Montecristo Edmundo's young, as in start smoking them the day they arrive.
Other brands like H. Upmann, Bolivar and say Partagas benefit greatly with some aging.
And there you have my 2 cents.

Samplers are great for developing ones personal taste, some sticks included don't necessarily need to much time down, HDM Epi 2's are great aged or ROT, I would look into what specifically is in the sampler and plan to smoke some right off the bat and lay a few other down for a bit, its tough with any vendor to find a sampler with significant age on them
