What organizations, groups and charities do you guys feel are important? Do you donate to them?

My compay donates money each holiday season instead of sending out client gifts. I am on the committee of choosing what organizations we donate to and am looking for some new ones.

There are a few that we donate to, some are environmental and some are community service. Wednesday's Child helps place older children in foster and adoption, the Nature Conservancy, Trout Utd, and the New England Aquarium (they do rescues in the Atlantic), are a few of our favorites.

You should look up the Fisher House Group (may just be called Fisher House)...They have built guest housing at BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center) and WRAMC (Walter Reed Army Medical Center) in which they allow the families of wounded soldiers to stay free of charge while their soldiers are being treated at the medical facility, before the soldier is able to leave the facility and procure housing on or around post (while the soldier is an inpatient at the hospital, the Army will fly the immediate family in to see them, however they provide nothing in the way of accomodations for the families). The Fisher houses are all fully staffed, and also include a dining room for the families, where a 3 meals a day are cooked and ready for the family members, so they never have to be far from their loved ones....Denzel Washington came to visit BAMC, and he asked about the Fisher Houses...When it was explained to him about what they were and what they did, he asked how much the buildings cost and what their operational costs for a year were...He was given a number, and he wrote a check on the spot for the construction of another house and 1 years operation...There are currently 2 Fisher Houses (with housing for 10 families I believe) here at BAMC, with 2 more under construction....I send a monthly donation to the Fisher House out of my check (I can't remember the name of the program, but you know, the Army charity system where you have the option each year to have an amount deducted from your check monthly as a donation)..I'm sorry if this explanation is a bit jumpy, I just got back from the hospital, and a massaive shot of Demoral....

Our family donates money to the American Red Cross, SPCA, and the local volunteer fire dept. We donate clothes and misc. stuff to Purple Heart and AMVETS. I donate time and energy as a volunteer fireman/EMT and give blood several times a year to the Red Cross.

Another good one is Spec. Ops Warrior Foundation.....It is an organization that provides scholarships to the children of fallen warriors....

There is also the Wounded Warrior Project. These guys take care of the guys/gals that come home severely disabled...The amputees and/or severely burnt troops...They provide electric wheel chairs, standard wheel chairs, specialty prosthetic limbs (like those used by amputee athletes and what-not)...

Christian Children's Fund. The one you see on TV all the time. An excellent organization. Besides sponsoring children, you can donate to their relief efforts.

Food for the Poor. They also do excellent work feeding the poorest of the poor, and can convert a small amount of money into a large amount of food (or shelter, medical care, education, etc.)

Both are honest, top notch organations which do a great amount of good for a small amount of money.

Salvation Army
We donate to the Salvation Army which has the highest ratio of getting my donatation directly to those in need. I used to send money all over until I did some charity research to find that I was supporting many bureaucratic organizations.

YWAM San Diego
Youth With A Mission San Diego builds houses for the poor in Tijuana. I was skeptical until I visited. 100% volunteer labor. 100% donated material. Zero over head payments. Each manager is supported by his own church or organization. Families are selected that earn $75.00 per week or less, have at least 3 children, and own the land. Last house I helped build the family was living in an old abandoned taxi on the land they had bought over 10 years with three childen. The homes are modest and built over the weekend by volunteer labor. No one preaches to or at them. The mother kept asking, "Why are yo doing this"? The answer, because the bibe tells us to. That it. Its a truly great organization. Building a house is a life changing event. We support two people that oversee the groups.

The only charity I've given to in the past few years is CoffeeKids (go figure!). They help families in the coffee growing countries in Central and South America with education, healthcare, etc. The people who actually grow, pick and process the coffee we enjoy don't make squat and don't see much of the money we pay here for our coffee. When I donate to CoffeeKids I know the money is going directly where it's needed. Until I can work my way up to travelling to the growing countries and buying coffee directly from the farmer, this is as good a way to help as I know.
Many people don't realize that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, after oil, and the people who produce it make the least from it.
