So I tend to get bored and moody during the winter months and usually try to focus myself on doing some fun projects to help counter this. Since I've started smoking cigars more and I enjoy playing guitar (or trying to ), I thought it'd be fun to build a cigar box guitar. Thought it would be interesting to some other members as well so I'll update this thread as I go. For my first attempt I'll be using a Dirty Rat box (courtesy of Thegreekone ).

Wait, where's the guitar, I just see an empty box. Don't make me read, just post pics, LOL

Acoustic or electric?
Probably electric, though I haven't decided yet if I'll just do a simply pick up or make my own magnetic pickup :dunno:. Little ways to go before that point.

I just got the box . I don't work that fast.

Dan, check out my album for pics of the one I did using a flying pig box... If you have questions or want to pick a brain I'm happy to help.

Working on a six string for Larry as we speak... These things are addictive to build!

Since Mike brought it up, he let me chose the box I wanted to have him make a cigar box guitar out of. I chose the LFD Salomone box and that thing should look awesome when he's finished.

Dan, I look forward to following your build!

ive always wanted to do one of these. where do you get your supplies for these?
Depends on how you want to do it...I've seen them done with stuff laying around the garage, and I've seen them as nive as a Strat... I pick up a ton of spare bits from ebay... random lots of loose parts from guitar techs are my favorite finds... people sell them cheap since there may not be complete sets, or the stuff could be a bit off... for the "traditional" 3 stringed approach...you don't need everything you do for a regular guitar so these are great ways to get spare parts cheap.

Enjoy!

OK guys, I wanted to go ahead and post up some links for anyone interested.

There is a ton of information available online and for me some of the measurements were tricky and these places helped out a lot.

Cigar Box Nation - Great overall resource. You have to dig a bit for some stuff, but it's a popular site so some good stuff if you look.

http://www.cigarboxnation.com/

Cigarboxguitars.com - Another good resource for tech details and inspiration.

Speaking about inspiration... Dady Mojo and Red Dog have some cool eye candy to get your juices flowing.

Nice looking box. Do you play Larry or will this be a decorative piece?

Mike posted some great links and resources (thanks Mike). There are some stunning examples of craftsmanship to draw examples from in the Cigar Box Nation photo gallery. And not just CBG either.

Dan, I plan on learning how to play it. Played around with a regular 6-string acoustic several years ago.

Stopped by the hardware store today and picked up a few supplies...

Couple of Poplar 1" x 2", some bolts, washers, and wood glue. Have to get a few things from Radio Shack and the music store, but should be able to get started tomorrow .
