So I was at my folks place a few weeks back, smoking in their yard and my said that she wanted me to ash in the plants and leave my nub in her yard because "...it kept pests away." I was trying to google that but couldn't really find anything about it. Anyone know anything about that? I know that the smoke seems to keep gnats and mosquitoes away, but I wasn't sure about this other motherly factoid.

dont know either..

but the smoke off of my cigar sent a couple of moths crashing to the earth last night while I was out smoking on the patio.. It was actually kinda funny.. they would fly through the smoke, and drop like rocks to the concrete.. it would take about 5 seconds, then they would start doing "the curly shuffle", spinning around on their heads on the ground, but unable to take off.. that would last about 10 seconds.. then they would fly off... only to go back through the smoke again a few seconds later (I was smoking under the light that they were attracted to..).. and start the whole process over again...

I'm not sure if it works or not but if my 71 yo Mother told me to do it I wouldn't hesitate. If for no other reason than to just keep her happy. I did find this article about tobacco juice http://www.gardenguides.com/98164-use-tobacco-juice-control-pests-garden.html so who knows, maybe the rainwater soaked ashes or nub will have the same effect? Probably not but it can't hurt.

Now be a good boy Sean and use the plants and yard for an ash tray......

hey, i have heard of burying hair to chase away dear and such, on the theory that the human scent scares them, why not something that was in your mouth for an hour?

also, IIRC, vitamin N is poisonous, and a cigar nub contains a decent chunk, especially for low body mass creatures like buggies. couple that with the fact that an entire cigar is biodegradable, and you basically have a perfect, green solution to pest control!

if it works.. o)

Deer usually don't like any strange scents but if its there all the time they get used to it. A buddy of mine leaves cigarette butts around his tree stand in the off season to get the deer accustomed to the smell. Seems to work.
I got eaten alive I've while smoking and other nights not touched. Maybe certain blends are better or have more of what they don't like.

I have had all sorts of animals come in the yard while smoking on my deck. I live in south MS and so far it has only kept the Mosquitos away lol. But I do use an ash tray and don't throw the cigar in the yard either.

Some times it seems to hold back mosquitoes & the like but not always. That would be a good addition to the notes we keep in our cigar journals. It could be listed right after the room note.

I think I am going to start dropping my nubs around the fruit trees to see if it helps keep the rodents off my apples/citrus...

Let us know if this works. I have rabbit issues and my neighbors get pissed when I break out the .177 and kill them. I've tried the rabbit repellent but it has like a moth ball scent to it which really stinks up the yard for days. I'm curious to know if your method will work.

A cigar nub has enough nicotine to kill a dog if ingested. Probably not a good idea to leave lying around.

My friend and I had a suspicion that his dog may have eaten one of my cigar nubs one day. 2-3 hours later that night, my buddy said the dog vomited about 5 times and his apartment smelled like an ash tray. After that, the dog was fine.

This is exactly what I am thinking, and since I don't have a dog, I hope the rats and rabbits chow down...

Oh and the wife just asked me if I had discovered anything from the cigar message board forum (you guys), so I told her "everyone seems to think it is a good idea." Thanks brothers, I now have permission to smoke more often to build up my stockpile of "natural" repellent! I'll keep you posted on the effectiveness.

thats not a bad idea at all...

ive got blue berries, black berries, and raspberries.. as well as two pear trees.. that the rodents seem to love...

I might start throwing a nub or two out there on occasion in the spring and see if it helps...

It seems to be working. Out here, we grow year round... our citrus trees have been rodent-free since I started crumbling the nubs and sprinkling them around the base of the trees.

Nicotine is a natural insecticide. Although it smelled NASTY, I used to keep some of my cigar butts in a large sealed milk jug filled with water. My wife would CAREFULLY pour about an ounce into a large spray bottle, fill it up with water and spray all of her tomatoes. No bugs at all. It lay WASTE to aphids on our trees.
