Ok guys help me out here. Last night I went outside to have a nice relaxing cigar. I grabbed an A Fuentas Rothschild Maduro that I KNOW is good because I have had several. well it SUCKED and I mean SUCKED! What gives. Can a cigar really be that bad from stick to stick? I am wondering if high moisture content can make a cigar act and taste this much worse than its perfectly rested counterpart? I took this cigar and several others camping and the humidity where I was at all weekend was well into the 75-76% range. (yes I took my hygrometer) This has been in my humidor for well into 2 months pryer to taking camping. I did leave the cigars in my Tupperdor all weekend but the humidity was fairly high.

Next question. What is a DRY BOX and how do I make one?

Cheers

No question that a cigar that has been sitting in high humidity environment can be far less than satisfactory. Are you saying that the RH INSIDE your tupador was high?

Dry box is, very simply.....a box. I use an empty cigar box. Depending on ambient RH in the house, I may just leave it sit on the counter for a day.

Can a cigar be bad stick to stick? Yup. It's a natural handmade product.

It could be a lot of things:
1. When you say "sucked" what do you mean? Burn, draw, flavors, etc?
2. What were the temp exposures /fluctuations over the weekend?
3. When did you get the stick?
4. When did you smoke the last one that was good?
4. How has it been stored since the last good one?
5. What is your ordinary storage rh and temp?

The most important question is "have you smoked another yet?" If the next one is fine, it was a fluke. If it's not, you got storage issues or it's in a sick period

significant temp and rh fluctuations measured by the length of exposure will most def throw off the smokes chemistry equilibrium .. even moreso with a small maduro shape.

dry boxing also could be as simple as zip locking it with a small dessicant pack/cylinder (that come packaged in other products) for a day or two.

dale,
Did you notice any tar? Black ooze at the cut? Happens from time to time and will put a hurting on your experience in no time. Sometimes can be remedied with another cut.

another question...what were you drinking at the time? Beverage choice can change the flavor of a cigar and vice-versa.

As you've read there are and can be a lot of things that affect our cigars and another item that you can cross off your list....did you or are you on any new meds as anti biotics are known to change your tastes...spicy foods or just having brushed your teeth and or mouthwash....higher RH for a day or two aren't going to really change the taste of your cigar so I'd cross that off my list. Cigars at one time or another will not be exactly as you have experienced before...they aren't identical things but if you smoke another cigar ( not the same brand) that you are experienced with and it too tastes different then I'd say it's not the cigar...its your tastes for whatever reason aren't working. Give it a few days and light up another one.

D all the above
2. What were the temp exposures /fluctuations over the weekend?
Temp was fairly stable at about 70 ish
3. When did you get the stick?
A couple months ago
4. When did you smoke the last one that was good?
about 3 weeks ago and it was AMAZING!!! Long ash, Perfect taste, perfect burn!
4. How has it been stored since the last good one?
70/70 roughly... The temp can change as my Humi is just in my house. I don't have a fancy wineadore yet
5. What is your ordinary storage rh and temp?
same as #4 except for taking it out putting it in my tuppadore for a few days

The most important question is "have you smoked another yet?" If the next one is fine, it was a fluke. If it's not, you got storage issues or it's in a sick period
I have not. I am actually going to take a few days off from them. SHHHHhhhhh dont tell my wife but I just got in a boatload of new stuff and I REALLY want to let them set for a bit before diving into them.

Thanks for all the input gents!

Cheers
Jay
