Recently I was at a bar which aloud cigarette smoking, but banned pipe and cigar smoking. Seems like a backassward double standard. Does anyone know of survey results comparing either smokers or non smoker’s preference of second hand “smell” (smoke)?

Opinionated non smokers often find any kind of smoke as reprehensible. I have heard pipe and cigar smokers state displeasure of cigarette smoke. I can’t recall a smoker (cigarette, pipe or cigar) complaining of pipe or cigar smoke. I have searched the net for survey results with little success.

You could always create a poll here to get some results. I currently have a similar poll up asking about peoples preferences in relation to cigarettes vs. cigar smoking. Although statistically I don't think its what you'd be looking for but I figured I'd suggest it if there is a chance it could help.

Yeah, a poll would be cool. But you'll probably get skewed results considering 100% of your polling sample smokes cigars :nodlaugh:.

Personally I think it's weird to ban cigar/pipe smoking, but allow cigarettes. Smoke is smoke, though I really like the smell of cigar/pipe smoke.

Just my two cents but part of the decision on behalf of the management at said bar may lie with the fact that most cigars and pipes give off a much higher volume of smoke than cigarettes and tend to be more pungent.

On the contrary most cigar and pipe tobaccos seem to have a much more pleasing aromas than cigarettes which give off that typical one dimensional smell, so your guess is as good as mine.

As far as tobacco smoke reek goes, cigarettes are as bad as anything. However, I suppose there is the odd cigar brand that can have a definitely different, noticeable, "robust" odor. Earthy-manurey like. Bad, in a kind of good way. But non-smokers love to hate anything, and the stereotype of the "old fogie's stogie" and the "stinky cigar" is too good to resist.

But to allow cigarettes and not pipes? That I don't get at all. I've never experienced an offensive pipe smoke. Even non-smokers often describe pipe tobacco smoke as "good."

My sister in law works at a bar and this is the exact reason. However it wont matter anyways when the new smoking bans take effect.

This is actually a philosophical question imho... Quite frankly it is the owners right to ban anything they wish! Quite frankly since the owner pays taxes to the government he should decide whether he wants to allow cigarettes, cigars and even pipes! The fact that the government is telling tax and law abiding businesses that they are not allowed any smokers in there establishments is against the law imho.

Recently I was at a large construction equipment auction that is conducted outside. I stayed away from people and made sure I was always down wind. Funny thing is that I had people comming closer to me. One time when the wind shifted I apologized to a lady near me and when I hopped up she said "no please stay - it reminds me of my father". I even had one guy say he liked the smell of a cigar but hated cigarettes. But that is outside - even I find cigars somewhat offensive concentrated indoors. So I don't find it too unusual to ban cigars and pipes - especially if my cirulation is marginal.

I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke.

As far as other opinions go, I've been told that my Padron 40th/64 series cigars stink and the cubans (Partagas, Bolivar) I smoke smell halfway decent. These opinions come from some relatives that are non-smokers.

Fair is fair....the 3 cigars shops I go to won't allow cigarretts. They say cigarette smell bad, and kicked my wife out. I laughed, and she said that's the last time she ever goes there.

Hi from Bali,
First let me say that I am very happy to live in a country that still allows the business owner to decide whether or not to allow any type of smoking in his or her business, Indonesia. The result is that 99% of businesses allow smoking either throughout their establishments or at the very least in designated smoking areas. As for the cigar vs. cigarette debate I would agree many business owners, knowing the inadequacy of their air cleaning systems, might fear pipes and cigars seeing they do produce more smoke volumes generally.

In the name of honesty I must add that the anti smoking power grabbers are working to change things here but thankfully our government has stood up to them pointing out that an estimated 10million Indonesians depend on the tobacco industry for at least a significant portion of their livelihood. A not insignificant number for the fourth most populous nation on earth with a population of about 235million. It would be disengenuous of me to suggest that Indonesia is so enlightened with regard to personal liberties on every subject but at least with regard to smoking, they are among the most enlightened nation's in the world. IMHO, Balibob

PS. Allow me to suggest that Bali should be on every tobacco lovers travel wish list. It is still possible here to enjoy a fine cigar or your favorite bowl and a liquid refresher on a colonial balcony overlooking a tropical fantasy scene without fear of being harrassed by a whinning non smoker. Life is good...

In North Lake Tahoe a couple years back, I walked into a casino with a lit cigar and was told to put it out or leave. The whole place was a cloud of cigarette smoke. I laughed and left. I couldn't believe this would be a rule in a casino of all places.

FWIW-I hate the smell of cigarette smoke too.
