i have a pair of ~1yr kittens, and an older cat, in the household. my wife has claimed that they swarm me when i come up after a smoke because they missed me. all well and good, they like me better.

here's the thing, though. the younger female especially likes to lick the first two fingers and thumb on my smoking hand, and will follow me around to get at me. she uses the same behavior when she thinks she can get my food away from me.

so, do we think animals can become fixated with vitamin N? or possibly with tobacco as a food stuff? it seems so clear to me based on her behavior, but i just don't know on this one.

and to head you all off, this might not be a good thing. she has eaten a VSG already. o(

I have an old, morbidly obese (seriously like 27 lbs. :)) male cat that tries to knock down the down to my man/smoking room every time I light up. No finger licking, but he seems to enjoy the ambient smoke...

My girlfriend's border collie will jump up and try to take sticks out of my mouth if I goad him. Have shown it on cam a few times in chat... Pretty hilarious.

My wife is a huge cat person. We've been living together for a bit over 14 years and had 6 cats over that time period usually in pairs… albeit 2 of the cats were around for a long time before I showed up. Not one of these cats enjoyed cigars or being in a room while I smoked them. I smoked in both of our houses over that period. That said, only 2 of these 6 cats actually liked me.

I think the one cat is chasing you around because you’re probably the sucker in the house that feeds them whenever they ask. I never feed the cats unless my wife is traveling, which is extremely rare.

Maybe a worthwhile experiment is to stop feed them and let your wife handle that responsibility… then see if the one cat still follows you around when you come upstairs from a smoke.

Had a dog once that liked to bite at the smoke in the air. I wouldn't think anything of it

My cat loves to smell my hands when I come in from a cigar. He licks my fingers as well.

Maybe cats just like stogies :)

My dog's sniff the crap out of my clothes anytime I've been out smoking. The cats could care less...unless they think they might get fed. That's about it. Now from a veterinary medicine standpoint...they shouldn't eat your cigars. Not only does it hurt your stash (a VSG...*shudder*), but nicotine can be lethal. I've seen pets (mostly dogs) that have died cause their owner decided they didn't want to pay for dewormer and gave them tobacco to kill the worms. Now usually it's chewing tobacco (occasionally cigarette tobacco) which has a higher nicotine content. If they ate a cigar, really ate it and not just chewed it up or mauled it, potentially could make them sick at least. End lecture .

My dog jumps on me EVERY time I enter the house, whether I have been outside to light the bbq, or gone all day to work. I am constantly amazed at the lack of time recognition our dog has. It wouldn't be so bad if he just greeted me happily, but he's jumping and panting, and working himself up to a frenzied state almost every time. He does love to come outside in the garage with me while I have my sticks, doesn't seem to faze him with the smoke smell.

I had a girlfriend years ago that had your typical angry adopted cat that liked no one. The thing literally ate the contents of an ashtray after a high school party for some ungodly reason. (as a side note, she was busted for that party based on the contents of the litter box). Ever since that day the cat loved anyone that smoked, so when we started seeing each other I was like an old friend to that little bastard...cat would not leave me alone. based on that experience, I would have to say cats are definitely affected by nicotine.

I think cats do get hooked on nicotine. A friend of mine is a cigarette smoker, and his cat will jump up and grab his hands to lick them after he's been out for a smoke.

My dog will eat any scrap of tobacco left unattended, sniffs/licks my hand after, and if I ever spit... he will lick it up. Pets are goofy. Cats are goofier.

My grandparents smoked like chimney's and the second hand smoke lingered in the house. This after years coated the walls with nicotine, as you can imagine. Well there dog would spend a few minutes every day licking the walls like crazy. So I guess you could say that even animals can be addicted in some way.

I have a male Persian cat that looooooves to rub himself all over my smoke laden clothes when I get home from the lounge. He also rubs up on and pretty much owns into any box of cigars I have out. Must be something about them they like.

Put down a couple of cigars for a second and when I turned back to put them in my humi one had two huge punctures in it from my cat...luckily nothing expensive. Also had them knock a humidor off a table and tear up a couple cigars a while back.
