I know a guy that is taking a trip to the Dominican Republic and I am wondering if it is worth while having him bring me back some cigars. I'm not sure how much cheaper they are there as I have never been myself or if I should just stick with the online retailers as I have been doing. Thanks in advance for any input. I am hoping this is the right section but if not please move it.

I would have him stick with local shop rollers. Trying to buy Opus, at a tourist destination is asking for fakes, especially if he not familiar with what to look for. So my thoughts are get a bundle or a box of something you can't normally buy here.

While I do not have any first hand experience. It seems to me that I read somewhere on BOTL that it actually costs more in the DR to buy premium cigars - and that the best of the lots are shipped outside the country for distribution.
Search BOTL forum for info - and do your homework.

Good Luck!

Someone told me that there is a store that sells Davidoff that is pretty reasonable if that is your thing, but you'd have to have some knowledge to pick out something really special.

I've been to the DR twice and can tell you that the cigars weren't any cheaper down there. I'd say have him go to a reputable shop down there and try and score some CC's, but if he doesn't know what to look for you might as well take your cash and flush it.

yeah there are tons of fakes down there, fake cuban, fake dominican miracle i didnt see fake nica's. The Fuentes that were legit were 2-3x more than what i would pay at my local B&M. But i did have some good hand rolled "house" blends from the shop on my resort when i went

There are alot of fakes in the DR. If your friend knows cigars pretty well, have him try some fresh rolled cigars; there are some tasty sticks down there that I've smoked straight from the roller.

i have never been to the Dominican myself, but my future father-in-law has been their twice and he said the same as many of the brothers here - You can find a great house blend, that is being advertised (and appropriately charged) as such. Its a tourist location known for cigars, of course there will be fakes of the 'expensive ones' but you should be able to walk away with some nice prizes! Let us know!
