I often find myself thinking of the Hererra Esteli... a cigar that I just don't get.
I've smoked a handful, I think all in the Corona size. None were bad. But, nothing that wowed me. I felt like I was smoking something entirely different than what I had read and heard about. Add in the fact that it's [supposedly] the same wrapper as the CyB, one of my favorite smokes, and I'm all sorts of confuzzled.

I also just now read that Willy thinks it is best in the Toro, so I will pick up a couple and revisit them in a different vitola.

So... what is a cigar you just "didn't get"? Perhaps something you loved that you expected to hate, perhaps something you expected to love and didn't, perhaps just something that was radically different - but not any better or worse - than what you were expecting.

Also, why do you think that was/is?

Ashton VSGs and ESGs. I can appreciate them but I don't see why people go nuts over them.

Fuente Hemingway. Again, I appreciate them but they'll never be a must have cigar for me.

Oliva V Maduro and Melanio Maduro. They are both just underwhelming compared to their regular production counterparts to me.

Alex that is an awesome question and absolutely hilarious too cause I read absolutely every where that this Padron are such amazing cigars and the lanceros are to die for. I had 3 of them tried all 3 and like yourself nothing to amazing. It was just a normal stick no kick kick. No monster flavour. Didn't keep my attention nothing. (I put the pic cause I don't know the name of the stick lol.)

I think my issue solely arises from the fact that there was so much hype that this cigar was so good that it just ruined it for me and also it may not be a personal favourite or right flavour to really catch my taste.

Opus X lost city

Bought for birth of my son as celebratory cigar.

Just thought it was decent. For the money it was terrible, my brother said it best "this would be an awesome $10 stick, but not much more".

Possibly didn't let them age but the forbidden x and angels share were waaaay better. The lost city was just a good stick, nothing more

Another I'll throw into the mix is the Tatuaje Anarchy, but in a good way.

I was expecting the "typical" Tatuaje spice bomb, strength bomb, etc. I was totally blown away that it was more of a medium, elegant smoke. I loved it. After smoking it, I just stared at the remnants thinking "I have no idea how this was a Tat."

Rocky Patel everything.

I have tried and tried, over and over, these things take like half the humidor of every B&M I go in, I am surprised you can't buy them at the grocery store by now.

Every time I smoke one I'm bored out of my mind.

Also, I thought the MUWAT was horrendous until I had a +11. I thought the Drew Estate religious faction would come pull my DE4L card any second.

It took the +11 for me to "get" the MUWAT finally, but now I absolutely love them.

......also, I don't really care one way or the other for the Herrera Esteli, ironically though, just like the MUWAT situation, I haven't had the Lonsdale yet so go figure.

I will go on to say H.Upmann Junior Corona, everyone says this is just an alright cigar nothing special nothing great about it but I absolutely love this cigar. Something about it that just keeps making me go back to it. Just covers everything flavour strength and I am just mind blown by it.

The VSGs and ESGs need time to shine. I've had both and when fresh and they are forgettable, but after the first year they start becoming immensely better. I smoked thru the fiver of ESGs that I had and I can honestly say I wish I had more, but I'm in no hurry to spend box prices on them anytime soon. They needed 2 years to really shine, who knows they could've gotten even better but unfortunately I didn't save any to find out. I have a few VSGs left from a box bought about 3 years ago and when I pick one up they are simply delightful, among the finest smokes I've ever had.

For me I'd put the Jaime Garcia in the "I don't get it category" along with 2 Unicos: the UF-13 and L-40. They are OK at best and I simply don't see where the piles of hype come from, or how the price is justified. More for you guys I guess. I also feel similar to the OP that the Herrera Esteli is just OK. I'd have another one if offered, and wouldn't mind trying a different vitola but I am in no hurry to go back to the well as paying for shipping alone would just about defeat the purpose. And I promise I'm not DE bashing intentionally but the final one is the Bait Fish. Read lots of good stuff about them and I think that they are just OK at best. Not for me I guess.

If their was only one great cigar that everyone loved, that's all they'd make. Hype can't make you enjoy a profile you don't like, or bad burn, draw etc. Usually this type of thread begins to fill up with; you didn't age that HE enough or that Padron wasn't at the right humidity, or you're smoking the wrong size. My list includes Four Kicks Headley Grange, Alec Bradley, Perdomo, Patel, Nat Sherman, most Camacho, the NUB family, KFC, and most CC's are milder than what I prefer most of the time, the list goes on.....

This just shows that everybody's palate is different. In regards to the OP, I love the HE but did not enjoy the CYB. Love Lost Cities as well. I'm glad people do pass over on them. One of the Opus' that doesn't get much love and they get sold at deep discounts out of people's collections. At $30 heck no. At $15, sign me up everyday. To stay on topic, a cigar that I didn't get? The Quesada Jalapa. Based on the hype, I thought it was going to be the shit. Turns out it's just shit. Like licking the earth's butthole.

Oliva V's. Everyone seems to love these. But so far they haven't been anything special to me. Also no.9's. I've never had a good one to date. Every single one had either had construction issues(every one I've had burns fucked or won't stay lit or is plugged. And no it's not RH. I keep my sticks at 62-64 and I've smoked some fresh from the b&m), or taste issues( I've had more than a few that tasted like nothing but dirt and ash.)
