I beat you all May '08 :)
Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been around much lately. Well, I've got a good reason, I'm a Jr High coach. We've been in the middle of track season and we realized how special a group of kids we had. I'm in Texas so our main focus is always football, but when this group won our Cross Country City Championship we knew we had a shot at the Track Championship. Generally, the team that wins the 7th grade track championship is the front runner for the 8th grade football season. Well, I've been getting my kids into the weightroom during our class period, so the only time to work with my track athletes was before and after school.
Well, it all paid off. In the last two weeks we've seen all the fruit from our labors. First, I maxed my big boys out a couple of weeks ago. Every one of them has gone up at least 30 pounds on their max since after Christmas. I had kids that couldn't lift the 45 pound bar that easily hit 75-85 pounds. But the prize went to my best linemen. I had 6 7th grade linemen (8 overall) over 155. One at 185 and 1 at 205!!!
Then last week we had our City Championship meet (delayed a week because of the Swine Flu). We came out strong with a 20 point lead after the field events. My top shot putter was 3 inches away from a city record, and my top triple jumper set a city record. We expected to get 3rd in triple jump. After 4 running events on Thursday we knew we had the meet won. We scored 141 point, second place was 82. Great day.
The thing that makes all that see great it that we are a very small junior high. In fact, there is one school that has over twice the number of kids as we do. We always compete well, we usually come up 2nd-4th out of 12 schools, though. We have to get more out of the kids that we have than any other school in the district. It worked for us this year, though. Our kids worked unbelievably hard and deserve what they've earned. Big party for them in a couple of weeks. Now we're the favorites for football, and we have the best basketball team in the city. We're gonna try and win em all next year!!!
