as for Chinese restaurants, a favorite of ours is called Gourmet Carousel and they cook very well, only the restaurant itself is not that nice, in fact it's a bit of a dump. Definitely check out the northbeach area at night as it is the lively hip italian neighborhood with nice restaurants and cafes. BART is very convenient and if you are only in the downtown/city area muni is fine, but bart operates into the night I believe their website has the schedule up

You didn't mention it pecifically, but it's the same place as Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli. Pier 39 is like a strip mall on a pier. It's got all kinds of little restaurant's and shops in it. It's also one of the areas where a lot of street performers go in good weather. Whenever I go to SF I always plan for a few hours there and have Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl from Chowders, get some fudge from The Fudge House down near the end of the pier, and spend an hour or so chilling on a bench watching freaks and people from all over the world walk by (only in tourist season which includes August).

Have fun!

For some of the best Mexican food in Northern California, check out El Farolito at 24th and Mission (right next to the BART station). Also, when you're at Ghirardelli Square, stop by Kara's Cupcakes. They make the best cupcakes I've ever had. (My wife and I used a couple dozen instead of a wedding cake.)

Another place to check out is Zachary's pizza (http://www.zacharys.com/), which has the best deep-dish in the Bay Area. And if you like garlic, check out The Stinking Rose on Columbus.

We go to the SF Museum of Contemporary Art (near Union Square) and the Exploratorium (hands-on science museum) whenever we're there. Alcatraz is a must -- we went to Pier 39 (a tourist trap if you ask me) while waiting for the boat and I had the chowder in a bread bowl. The fun thing was getting there -- we took a trolley car from near Union Square along the Embarcadero. And for cigars, see Eddie at Grant's Tobacco on Market near 4th.
