Clipping the head-my method.

I have always preferred to "clip" my cigars as follows: I use the tip of a triangular razor blade, the kind you put in a hardware store type retractible cutting tool, and with the tip go around making a circular cut to remove a disc from the end of the head about 1/2 the diameter of the cigar. To me it's much more precise than trying to judge exactly where to place a conventional cigar cutter to get just the right amount of "hole" in the head. Also, I angle the tip of the blade in so I end up with a shallow divot in the end, rather than a straight cut.

If I don't have a razor blade handy the tip of a small sharp knife will do.

Anyone else do this?

If you can't figure out how much of the end to clip with a cigar cutter you can always open the cigar cutter up and place it on a table then place the cigar in it so it rests on the table. Always takes the right amount off. I learned this trick when my dad and I went to a cigar store and asked how to sharpen the blade on his cutter because it wasn't working right. Turned out he wasn't circumcising the stick he was lobbing the head off but just didn't know better. Ten plus years later I still make fun of him for that.

that sounds just like using a Cigar Spike.

Just never use the method of the teeth...never a good experience on this end. I have used a similar method with a small pocket knife on occasion, just be aware of build ups and such, you can compromise flavor.

Can't say as I have, I guess I'm not patient enough, I just wanna cut the bastard. I've used many conventional cutters, table saws, miter saws, band saws, teeth and even a 16" disc sander at work once.

I use my (clean) thumbnail when I don't have a cutter.... does that count?

Lol- I have used this method only as a last resort.

I've never cut my cigars just using a razor blade.

I generally use a punch (mine has two different sizes). For torpedoes, perfectos, etc, I'll use my SAK scissors or regular double-sided cigar cutter.

There have been a couple times while on vacation where I've lost/misplaced my cutter. In those instances, I just bit off then end (messy) or used a short bladed knife.
