Ok guys,

Just smoked one of these and it definately looked better in the humi than it tasted.
Blah
Everything looked good, purchased from a botl onboard as part of a sampler.
Construction great, burn great, ash razor sharp nice draw just flavorless.
Did I just get a crappy one or have any of you guys had similar experiences?

:dunno:

Not to imply anything directly, but the ELs are probably the most questionable cigars there are. My best estimation is the issue basically comes down to two factors... lots of fakes, and inconsistent production. I mean a greater degree of inconsistency than normally found in Habanos lines.

Just to be clear... if you receive 10 different Partagas Shorts... they will likely all smoke very similar and you could tell them apart from say 10 different Boli PCs, which would also smoke pretty similar. Some will be more "on" than others if we varied age and storage conditions, but profiles are pretty standard.

Now with ELs, it seems you never really know what you're going to get. I've had some truly heavenly examples that matched my best regular production experiences. I've also had some dog rockets. I've had a number that fell in between. I don't feel theres a lot of consistency. Possibly due to factors like rollers, crops, and being such a limited run, where the regular lines are "standards" and have been perfected over time.

I would say do not consider ELs to be a grail, but don't pass one up for a good price, you can really be surprised when you luck into a great example.

I have noticed similar inconsistencies with EL's. I have a box of Partagas Series D #3 from '01 that are really nice. I just recently bought a box of R&J Hermosos #2 that are very bland...Nothing like the Belicosos, Prince of Wales or Churchills that I have.

I agree that the EL's are kind of like a wrench being thrown into the normal production. Plus there are other issues such as aging, wrapper sourcing, etc. that all combine to make the EL's problematic and less consistent.
Same with Regional Releases, but they seem to smoke better...I wonder why?

In general, the real DC ELs are coming around and are good cigars that clearly show their potential to be great cigars. The problem is that they have been heavily counterfeited, as have the Sublimes and the Partagas Piramides. Not saying that the brother who sold you the sampler had fakes, just saying that there are probably more fakes than real DCs (and Sublimes) out there.

Also the '00 Cohiba Piramide EL was heavily faked/counterfeited as well!!
