confused

i've been contemplating getting a handgun for a couple of months. i'm not overly concerned with cc or sd at this point, but i know that if you have one, it will be available for that duty. my initial idea was just to do some target shooting, so it was suggested i stick with a .22. i like the cost of the weapon and the ammo. i held a beretta that seemed a little short in the grip for my hand and i wondered about a ruger. now that i've read some of the posts here, and heard all of the glowing reviews of the glock 23, i wonder if i should consider it. i know it's good, but the expense is quite a bit more and i assume the cost of going to the range and shooting for a couple of hours might get a little high too.
give me some feedback please. i don't live in a high crime area, compared to most i hear about. is the cost really worth it? thanks guys.

Get the glock 19. It is the 9mm version of the compact frame. The ammo is much more accessable and more reasonably priced.

Get the Glock 23. I love the .40 caliber round. If you decide you want to shoot the cheaper 9mm at the range, you can buy a conversion barrel for 9mm. It is like having the G23 and the G19 in the same gun. :thumbsup:

That is true! You can also get a .22LR barrell and really shoot for cheap. Good call elderboy!

love the Glock!! 23 is a great gun!! i shy away from the 9mm because it's such a fast round! tends to go through what you're shooting at and hit what's behind it as well.

ive shot a rugger p series before. it was possibly the worst pistol ive ever shot. the glock may be more expensive then the rugger but worth the extra money.

Have you thought about getting an air pistol? You can get a verry accurate one for less than a .22 and shoot it in your garage, basement whatever. No time or money for a range, and you can develop your skills. Then consider a good center fire pistol down the road after you know how to shoot and can properly evaluate what would be good for you by testing them. I like Mitch's suggestion of an airgun, when you are ready to purchase something else I suggest going to a range where they rent guns, rent what you are thinking about purchasing, some will even let you exchange guns during the rental time. Much better to blow a little cash up front then to end up with a gun you don't like.

I've shot since I was a tot, but wanted a fun 'plinker' when I got old enough to buy my first pistol.

After much research, I chose a Ruger Mark II (.22 cal). I've had it for many years of happy service, and it's flawlessly cycled well over 17,000 rounds with no more maintenance than good cleanings. It was a good way to develop proficiency with a handgun, and cheap to shoot too.

They've since been replaced by the Mark III, which incorporates a few new safety features, but otherwise remain largely unchanged.

I think learning to shoot with a small caliber is a good idea before stepping up to a full size pistol.

If you didn't grow up shooting, it may be a good idea to enroll in a class to learn some gun safety rules and procedures before purchasing. Also - many gun ranges will rent different pistols for you to try out before purchasing one of your own.
