Proposal Would Ban Tobacco Sampling at Retail Tobacconists.

The City of Minneapolis has taken steps to ban tobacco sampling at retail tobacco shops.

Specifically, the Minneapolis Regulatory, Energy and Environment Committee has asked the City Council to approve an amendment to Title 13, Chapter 281 of the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances relating to Licenses and Business Regulations: Tobacco Dealers.

The proposed amendment includes a new provision that would prohibit indoor use of tobacco samples in exclusive tobacco shops. A hearing on the proposed ordinance is scheduled for November 29, 2010.

We believe that the right and ability to sample tobacco products is important to cigar enthusiasts.​

wtf is wrong with people... I can understand the logic behind banning smoking in public restaurants/bars/businesses because there are many people/workers who don't smoke. But why ban smoke in a cigar shop?!? Do they realize it can hurt their own tax revenues?

Winters are long and cold in Minneapolis. It seems to me that one of the unintended conequences of bans on public smoking would be for a smoker to smoke at home more often, with kids and nonsmoking spouses around. Wouldn't the city rather that the smoking take place in a parlor?

For what it's worth, I just sent an email to the chair of the Regulatory, Energy and Environment Committee of the Minneapolis City Council.
